## What Is a Druid?
The Druid is a powerful spellcaster who draws upon nature, the elements, and the primal forces that shape the world. While Wizards study the principles of arcane magic and Clerics channel divine power through faith, Druids practise ancient traditions that connect them to the natural world and the supernatural powers associated with it.
Their magic allows them to command storms, influence plants, heal the wounded, communicate with animals, and transform into living creatures. Some Druids draw their power directly from nature, while others revere deities associated with the natural world or combine their devotion with ancient primal traditions.
At first glance, a Druid might appear to be little more than a wilderness guardian who protects forests and animals. In reality, their responsibilities and beliefs are often far more complicated. Some preserve the balance between civilisation and wilderness, while others devote themselves to the cycles of life and death, the movement of celestial bodies, or the elemental forces responsible for shaping the world.
Druids are among the most versatile spellcasters in Dungeons & Dragons. Their abilities allow them to adapt to an extraordinary range of situations, whether confronting enemies through powerful magic, healing injured companions, exploring dangerous territory, or transforming into animals.
Some Druids live as hermits within remote forests, while others serve as spiritual advisers, wandering healers, guardians of sacred places, or members of ancient organisations dedicated to protecting the natural order.
What unites them is their understanding that the natural world possesses extraordinary power and that maintaining a connection to those forces requires knowledge, dedication, and respect.
A Druid is not simply a spellcaster who commands nature. They are part of the living world whose forces they have learned to wield.
---
## Guardians of the Natural World
Many Druids develop their abilities through ancient traditions passed between generations of practitioners.
These traditions often emphasise an understanding of the natural world, including the behaviour of animals, the changing seasons, the relationships between living creatures, and the elemental forces that influence the environment.
Some Druids train within secluded circles located in forests, mountains, wetlands, or other places associated with powerful natural energies. Others learn from experienced mentors, nature spirits, or communities that preserve knowledge dating back centuries.
Their connection to nature does not necessarily require them to reject civilisation.
Some live among ordinary settlements, helping communities maintain healthy relationships with the surrounding environment. They may protect farmland from unnatural blights, assist during droughts, or defend villages threatened by dangerous creatures.
Others believe that civilisation must be carefully restrained to prevent the destruction of natural habitats.
These Druids may confront those who exploit forests, poison rivers, or threaten the survival of entire ecosystems.
However, not every Druid believes that nature should remain untouched.
Fire destroys forests but also creates opportunities for new growth. Predators kill other animals but contribute to ecological balance. Death and decomposition return nutrients to the earth, allowing new life to flourish.
For many Druids, understanding these relationships is essential.
Their responsibilities often extend beyond protecting individual creatures or locations. They seek to preserve the natural processes that allow the world to continue functioning.
Some Druids also study the relationship between nature and the supernatural.
The influence of the Feywild, the movements of celestial bodies, and the presence of elemental forces can all become important areas of study.
Although Druids share a common connection to nature, their beliefs and methods may differ considerably.
One might be a peaceful healer who avoids unnecessary violence, while another becomes a relentless guardian willing to destroy anything threatening the lands under their protection.
What defines them is their connection to the natural world and the responsibilities they choose to accept because of it.
---
## Primal Magic
Druids are full spellcasters capable of wielding powerful magic associated with nature and the elemental forces of the world.
Their spells allow them to manipulate plants, influence weather, restore vitality, summon supernatural manifestations, and alter the environment around them.
Unlike Wizards, whose magic is commonly associated with scholarly arcane traditions, Druids develop their abilities through an understanding of natural and supernatural forces.
Their spellcasting uses **Wisdom**, reflecting their awareness, intuition, and connection to the world.
At first level, Druids begin with two cantrips and four prepared first-level spells.
As they gain experience, their magical capabilities expand, eventually providing access to spells of ninth level.
Druids can change their prepared spells after completing a Long Rest, selecting different spells from the Druid spell list.
This provides considerable flexibility.
A Druid expecting to explore dangerous wilderness might prepare spells that assist with travel, communication, or protection against environmental hazards.
During an expedition into ancient ruins, they may instead prepare magic capable of detecting supernatural dangers, restoring injured companions, or overcoming magical obstacles.
When preparing for battle, Druids can select spells that control terrain, inflict elemental damage, or interfere with the movement of enemies.
Their magic includes powerful offensive abilities such as Call Lightning, Wall of Fire, and Storm of Vengeance, alongside restorative spells such as Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, and Heal.
Other spells allow them to communicate with animals, influence plant growth, transform creatures, or travel through the natural world using supernatural means.
At higher levels, Druids can command extraordinary natural forces through spells such as Control Weather, Earthquake, and Tsunami.
These abilities make Druids effective in combat, exploration, and support roles.
However, the effectiveness of their magic often depends upon preparation and an understanding of the situation.
A Druid who selects the correct spells can transform an apparently impossible challenge into something manageable.
Their greatest magical strength is the ability to respond to changing circumstances through the extraordinary versatility of nature itself.
---
## Druidic
At first level, Druids gain **Druidic**, the secret language associated with their ancient traditions.
This language allows Druids to communicate with others who possess the same knowledge while concealing information from those unfamiliar with their practices.
Druidic can be spoken and used to leave hidden messages.
Those who understand the language can recognise such messages automatically, while others may notice their presence through careful investigation without necessarily understanding their meaning.
This makes Druidic particularly useful for preserving information, marking important locations, or communicating warnings between members of different circles.
The language also represents a cultural connection between Druids whose beliefs and practices may otherwise differ.
A guardian of an ancient forest and a wandering Druid who studies the stars may follow very different traditions, but both can possess knowledge of the same secret language.
Druidic also grants access to **Speak with Animals**, which Druids always have prepared.
This spell allows them to communicate verbally with Beasts, asking questions and exchanging information with creatures that would otherwise be unable to understand ordinary speech.
A Druid might question a bird about activity near a distant settlement, ask a wolf about unusual creatures moving through its territory, or seek information from an animal that witnessed an important event.
Although animals do not automatically possess the knowledge or intelligence of humanoids, their observations can provide valuable information.
For Druids, communication with the natural world is an important part of understanding it.
---
## Primal Order
At first level, Druids choose a **Primal Order**, representing the particular approach they take toward their connection with nature.
The two available options are Magician and Warden.
**Magician** represents Druids who focus upon magical knowledge and the supernatural forces associated with the natural world.
These Druids learn an additional cantrip from the Druid spell list, expanding their available magical abilities.
They also gain a bonus to Intelligence checks involving Arcana or Nature, reflecting their understanding of magical and natural phenomena.
This approach is particularly suitable for Druids who emphasise spellcasting, investigation, and the study of supernatural forces.
**Warden** represents Druids who prepare themselves to defend the natural world through physical combat.
These Druids gain proficiency with Martial weapons and training with Medium armour, allowing them to participate more effectively in dangerous encounters.
Their additional martial capabilities can be particularly useful for characters who expect to fight alongside frontline warriors.
Primal Order does not determine which Druid Circle a character must eventually join.
A Druid who initially develops martial abilities may later specialise in spellcasting, while a magically focused Druid might eventually pursue powerful transformations.
Instead, the feature represents an early decision about how the character approaches the responsibilities associated with their connection to nature.
---
## Wild Shape
One of the Druid's most recognisable abilities is **Wild Shape**, which allows them to transform into animals.
Beginning at second level, Druids can use a Bonus Action to assume the form of a Beast they have learned through their connection to nature.
This transformation provides extraordinary flexibility, allowing them to adopt physical capabilities that would otherwise be unavailable.
A Druid might become a wolf to follow the scent of a fleeing creature, a spider to investigate a narrow passage, or a powerful predator when direct combat becomes necessary.
At higher levels, they gain access to additional animal forms, including creatures capable of flight.
Wild Shape is limited by the Druid's level.
At second level, a Druid knows four eligible Beast forms, each with a maximum Challenge Rating of 1/4 and without a flying speed.
At fourth level, the number of known forms increases to six, and the maximum Challenge Rating rises to 1/2.
At eighth level, Druids know eight forms, can assume Beasts with a maximum Challenge Rating of 1, and gain access to forms capable of flight.
These limitations are different for certain Druid Circles, particularly the Circle of the Moon.
Wild Shape also changes how Druids withstand damage.
Under the revised rules, a Druid does not replace their normal Hit Points with those of the animal they become.
Instead, they retain their existing Hit Points and gain Temporary Hit Points equal to their Druid level when transforming.
While transformed, they use the physical statistics of their chosen Beast, subject to the features and characteristics retained through Wild Shape.
A Druid normally cannot cast spells while transformed, although they can maintain Concentration upon a spell already active.
This creates opportunities to combine spellcasting with transformation.
A Druid might cast a spell that controls an area of the battlefield before transforming into an animal capable of moving through the resulting environment.
Wild Shape can also be useful outside combat.
A small creature may pass through spaces that would be inaccessible to a humanoid, while an aquatic animal can navigate underwater environments more effectively.
At higher levels, Druids gain the ability to cast spells while transformed, further expanding the versatility of Wild Shape.
For many Druids, transformation is more than a useful magical technique. It represents their extraordinary connection to the creatures that inhabit the natural world.
---
## Wild Companion
At second level, Druids gain **Wild Companion**, allowing them to summon a nature spirit that assumes the form of an animal.
Through this feature, a Druid can expend a use of Wild Shape or a spell slot to cast Find Familiar without requiring material components.
The familiar summoned through this ability is a Fey creature that takes an animal form.
Unlike an ordinary familiar that may remain indefinitely, a Wild Companion disappears when the Druid completes their next Long Rest.
This ability provides Druids with another way to use their connection to nature without transforming themselves.
A Wild Companion can assist during exploration, observe dangerous locations, and provide information about areas that might be difficult for the party to investigate directly.
An owl might scout from above, while a small creature could explore a passage too narrow for the rest of the adventuring party.
Familiars are not normally intended to function as conventional combatants, but their presence can still provide useful assistance through movement, observation, and appropriate actions.
Wild Companion also demonstrates that Wild Shape is not exclusively associated with taking an animal's form.
The same supernatural connection that allows a Druid to transform can be used to summon a temporary spirit companion.
This expands the class's versatility and provides additional opportunities for exploration and problem-solving.
---
## Wild Resurgence
At fifth level, Druids gain **Wild Resurgence**, an ability that allows them to exchange magical resources between spellcasting and Wild Shape.
This feature represents their increasing control over the primal energy that powers both abilities.
If a Druid has no remaining uses of Wild Shape, they can expend a spell slot to recover one use.
This can be accomplished without requiring an action, although the ability is limited to once on each of the Druid's turns.
Wild Resurgence also works in the opposite direction.
A Druid can expend one use of Wild Shape to recover a first-level spell slot.
This particular use can only be performed once before completing a Long Rest.
The ability creates an important relationship between the Druid's magical and transformative capabilities.
A Druid who relies heavily upon Wild Shape may choose to sacrifice a spell slot when additional transformations become necessary.
Another Druid might prefer to preserve their spellcasting capabilities, exchanging an unused Wild Shape charge for additional magical energy.
This is particularly important because many Druid Circles use Wild Shape as a resource for abilities other than ordinary animal transformation.
A Circle of Stars Druid can spend Wild Shape to assume a luminous Starry Form, while a Circle of the Sea Druid can use the same resource to manifest the destructive force of the ocean.
Wild Resurgence therefore benefits several different approaches to the class.
It allows Druids to adapt their available resources according to the challenges they face, reinforcing their reputation as exceptionally flexible spellcasters.
---
## Elemental Fury
At seventh level, Druids gain **Elemental Fury**, a feature that improves their offensive capabilities.
This ability allows them to specialise further in either magical attacks or combat involving weapons and Wild Shape.
The first option is **Potent Spellcasting**.
This allows a Druid to add their Wisdom modifier to the damage inflicted by their Druid cantrips.
The benefit improves the effectiveness of simple magical attacks, making them more useful against increasingly dangerous enemies.
At fifteenth level, Improved Elemental Fury greatly extends the range of eligible Druid cantrips, allowing the character to strike enemies from considerably greater distances.
This approach is particularly valuable for Druids who prefer spellcasting over direct physical combat.
The second option is **Primal Strike**.
Once per turn, a Druid can inflict an additional 1d8 Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage when they hit with an attack using a weapon or Beast form.
This allows Druids who rely upon martial combat or Wild Shape to channel elemental forces through their attacks.
At fifteenth level, Improved Elemental Fury increases this additional damage to 2d8.
Primal Strike is particularly useful for Druids who regularly engage enemies through animal transformations or conventional weapons.
Elemental Fury allows the class to develop in different directions without requiring every Druid to adopt the same combat style.
Some become powerful spellcasters whose cantrips remain effective throughout their career, while others develop increasingly dangerous physical attacks empowered by elemental energy.
---
## Beast Spells and Archdruid
As Druids become more experienced, their connection to the natural world grows increasingly powerful.
At eighteenth level, they gain **Beast Spells**, allowing them to cast spells while using Wild Shape.
This removes one of the most important limitations of ordinary animal transformation.
A Druid who has assumed the form of a Beast can continue to use much of their spellcasting without first returning to their normal body.
However, spells that require material components with specified costs or that consume their material components remain restricted.
Beast Spells creates unusual combinations of physical and magical abilities.
An experienced Druid might assume the form of a powerful predator while continuing to cast spells that influence the battlefield or protect companions.
At nineteenth level, Druids gain access to an **Epic Boon**, representing an extraordinary achievement appropriate to characters approaching the height of mortal capability.
At twentieth level, they gain **Archdruid**, the culmination of their mastery over nature.
This feature provides several benefits.
**Evergreen Wild Shape** allows the Druid to recover one expended use of Wild Shape when rolling Initiative if they have none remaining.
**Nature Magician** allows them to transform unexpended uses of Wild Shape into spellcasting resources, converting each use into two levels toward a single recovered spell slot.
This can be performed once before requiring a Long Rest.
Archdruid also grants **Longevity**, dramatically slowing the effects of ageing.
For every ten years that pass, the Druid's body ages only one year.
This reflects their extraordinary connection to the cycles of life and the regenerative forces of nature.
Although even the most powerful Druids remain vulnerable to danger, their mastery grants them abilities far beyond those possessed by ordinary mortals.
At the height of their careers, Archdruids become extraordinary representatives of the primal forces that shape the world.
---
## Masters of Adaptation
One of the Druid's greatest strengths is their ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
Their extensive spell list provides options for combat, exploration, healing, investigation, and overcoming environmental hazards.
Unlike spellcasters who possess a relatively fixed selection of magical abilities, Druids can change their prepared spells after completing a Long Rest.
This allows them to adjust their capabilities according to the challenges they expect to encounter.
Wild Shape provides another important advantage.
A Druid who cannot overcome an obstacle through spellcasting may instead transform into an animal possessing the necessary physical abilities.
The class also benefits from the ability to exchange resources through Wild Resurgence.
This relationship between spellcasting and Wild Shape provides additional flexibility, particularly for Circles whose specialised abilities depend upon the expenditure of Wild Shape uses.
Druids can therefore approach the same challenge in several different ways.
An enemy blocking a narrow passage might be confronted directly through elemental magic, restrained through spells that manipulate plants, or avoided through transformation into a creature capable of reaching another route.
A wounded companion might receive magical healing, while a dangerous environment could be overcome through spells that provide protection or improve movement.
This versatility does not mean Druids automatically possess the correct answer to every problem.
Their effectiveness depends upon preparation, resource management, and understanding how different abilities interact.
However, few classes offer such a broad combination of spellcasting, transformation, and practical utility.
---
## The Druid's Role in an Adventuring Party
Druids are exceptionally versatile adventurers capable of fulfilling several different roles depending upon their chosen Circle and prepared spells.
Their primary strength comes from the combination of spellcasting, Wild Shape, and abilities that influence the surrounding environment.
In combat, Druids can specialise in dealing magical damage, controlling enemy movement, healing companions, or supporting allies through supernatural effects.
Their battlefield control spells are particularly valuable.
Magic capable of creating difficult terrain, restraining enemies, or influencing the weather can dramatically change how an encounter unfolds.
Other Druids focus upon transformation.
A Circle of the Moon Druid can assume powerful Beast forms and fight alongside frontline warriors, while a Circle of Stars Druid can adopt a magical constellation form that enhances attacks, healing, or Concentration.
Certain Circles provide alternative methods of support.
Wildfire Druids can summon spirits that assist with healing and movement, while Shepherd Druids specialise in supporting summoned creatures and strengthening allies.
Land Druids possess versatile spellcasting and the ability to recover magical resources, while Sea Druids manipulate oceanic forces to damage and reposition enemies.
Outside combat, Druids can serve as scouts, wilderness guides, investigators, and protectors against environmental dangers.
Wild Shape allows them to explore places that might be inaccessible to ordinary adventurers, while spells such as Speak with Animals and Pass without Trace can provide valuable assistance during travel and investigation.
Their Wisdom also makes them effective at recognising danger and interpreting their surroundings.
Although Druids possess fewer Hit Points than many martial characters, their defensive spells, transformations, and subclass abilities can provide considerable protection.
Their greatest contribution is adaptability.
A Druid can support almost any adventuring party by combining magical power with practical knowledge and a strong connection to the natural world.
---
## Druid Circles
As a Druid develops their abilities, they choose a specialised tradition known as a **Druid Circle**.
Each Circle represents a different understanding of nature, its supernatural forces, and the responsibilities of those who wield primal magic.
At third level, a Druid chooses a subclass, gaining abilities that distinguish their approach to spellcasting, transformation, and the use of natural power.
Some Circles emphasise direct combat, while others focus upon healing, summoning, elemental magic, or supernatural knowledge.
### Circle of the Moon
The Circle of the Moon consists of Druids who specialise in the power of Wild Shape.
While all Druids can assume animal forms, members of the Circle of the Moon develop this ability far beyond the limits of ordinary practitioners.
Their training allows them to transform into increasingly powerful Beasts, making them particularly effective during direct combat.
At third level, these Druids gain **Circle Forms**, significantly improving their transformations.
They can assume Beast forms with higher Challenge Ratings than ordinary Druids, eventually gaining access to exceptionally dangerous creatures.
Their transformations also provide improved defences.
While using Wild Shape, a Moon Druid can use an Armour Class equal to 13 plus their Wisdom modifier unless their chosen Beast possesses a higher Armour Class.
They also gain Temporary Hit Points equal to three times their Druid level, making their transformed bodies considerably more resilient.
Moon Druids gain access to **Circle of the Moon Spells**, which remain prepared and can be cast even while transformed.
This allows them to provide certain magical effects without abandoning their chosen Beast form.
As they become more experienced, **Improved Circle Forms** strengthens their attacks and allows them to channel Radiant damage through their transformed bodies.
At higher levels, **Moonlight Step** grants supernatural teleportation, allowing them to move across the battlefield through magical moonlight.
Their ultimate ability, **Lunar Form**, greatly increases the damage they can inflict while transformed and allows them to carry a willing companion when using Moonlight Step.
The Circle of the Moon is particularly suitable for players who enjoy animal transformation, frontline combat, and characters who fight through the physical capabilities of powerful creatures.
### Circle of the Land
The Circle of the Land is dedicated to the preservation of natural knowledge and the magical power associated with different environments.
Its members often serve as guardians of sacred places, advisers to communities, or protectors of regions whose natural balance has become threatened.
Unlike Druids who focus heavily upon Wild Shape, members of the Circle of the Land emphasise spellcasting and their connection to the environment.
Their abilities allow them to draw magical power from different types of landscape.
Through **Circle of the Land Spells**, these Druids choose an environment after completing a Long Rest.
The available environments are Arid, Polar, Temperate, and Tropical.
Each provides access to additional spells reflecting the natural forces associated with that environment.
Unlike the older version of this tradition, which tied a Druid's spells to a particular landscape, the revised Circle of the Land allows the character to change their environmental connection.
This provides considerable adaptability when travelling between different regions.
Their abilities also include **Land's Aid**, which allows them to expend Wild Shape to produce a supernatural eruption of flowers and thorns.
This effect damages selected enemies through Necrotic energy while restoring Hit Points to a chosen creature.
At sixth level, **Natural Recovery** allows Land Druids to recover expended spell slots during a Short Rest and cast one of their Circle spells without expending a slot.
As they become more experienced, **Nature's Ward** provides protection against Poison and grants resistance to a damage type associated with their chosen environment.
Their ultimate ability, **Nature's Sanctuary**, allows them to manifest a protective region of spectral trees and vines.
This area provides cover and supernatural resistance to companions, making it particularly valuable when protecting allies during dangerous encounters.
The Circle of the Land rewards players who enjoy versatile spellcasting, preparing for different environments, and using nature magic for both offence and protection.
### Circle of the Sea
The Circle of the Sea consists of Druids whose magic is connected to oceans, storms, and the immense elemental forces that shape the waters of the world.
Its members may serve as guardians of coastal settlements, protectors of marine ecosystems, or wandering practitioners who study the destructive and restorative properties of the sea.
Unlike Druids whose abilities focus upon forests or animal transformation, Sea Druids draw upon the power of waves, wind, and violent storms.
Their defining ability is **Wrath of the Sea**, gained at third level.
By expending a use of Wild Shape, a Sea Druid surrounds themselves with a supernatural manifestation of oceanic power.
This creates an area of swirling waves, spray, and storm energy that can damage nearby enemies through Cold damage.
The effect can also push creatures away, allowing the Druid to control their positioning and prevent dangerous opponents from remaining close.
As they become more experienced, **Aquatic Affinity** increases the area affected by Wrath of the Sea and grants a swimming speed.
This makes Sea Druids particularly effective in aquatic environments while improving their ability to control enemies during ordinary combat.
At tenth level, **Stormborn** grants additional supernatural capabilities while Wrath of the Sea is active.
These include a flying speed and resistance to Cold, Lightning, and Thunder damage.
The Druid becomes increasingly capable of moving through dangerous environments while surrounded by the elemental power of the storm.
Their ultimate ability, **Oceanic Gift**, allows them to share Wrath of the Sea with another willing creature.
This means the Druid can grant their oceanic protection and offensive abilities to a companion, transforming an ally into a temporary manifestation of the sea's destructive power.
The Circle of the Sea is particularly suitable for players who enjoy storm magic, elemental damage, and controlling enemy movement through supernatural forces.
### Circle of Stars
The Circle of Stars consists of Druids who study the night sky and the supernatural patterns revealed through celestial movements.
Its members believe that the stars preserve knowledge of past events, reveal the influence of distant powers, and provide guidance concerning the natural cycles of the world.
Unlike Druids whose abilities are closely associated with animals or landscapes, members of this Circle draw upon the celestial patterns that influence existence.
Their defining magical tool is a **Star Map**, an object that records constellations and serves as a focus for their supernatural abilities.
Through this map, they gain access to Guidance and Guiding Bolt, allowing them to assist companions and unleash Radiant magic against enemies.
Their most distinctive ability is **Starry Form**.
By expending a use of Wild Shape, the Druid transforms their appearance into a luminous constellation rather than assuming the body of an animal.
The form provides one of three magical benefits.
**Archer** allows the Druid to unleash radiant arrows against enemies, providing a reliable magical attack.
**Chalice** strengthens their restorative magic, allowing them to heal another creature whenever they cast an appropriate healing spell.
**Dragon** improves their ability to maintain Concentration and succeed at certain mental ability checks.
As they become more experienced, **Cosmic Omen** allows Stars Druids to consult celestial patterns and influence important rolls.
Depending upon the omen received, they can improve an ally's chances of success or interfere with an enemy's actions.
At higher levels, **Twinkling Constellations** improves their Starry Form, strengthening its benefits and allowing them to change their chosen constellation during the transformation.
Their ultimate ability, **Full of Stars**, grants resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage while in Starry Form.
The Circle of Stars is particularly suitable for players who enjoy celestial magic, divination, radiant attacks, and supporting companions through supernatural guidance.
### Circle of Wildfire
The Circle of Wildfire is dedicated to the relationship between destruction and renewal.
Its members understand that fire is not simply a force of devastation. Although flames can destroy forests and settlements, they can also clear dead vegetation, return nutrients to the soil, and create opportunities for new life.
Wildfire Druids regard these processes as essential aspects of the natural world.
Their magical abilities combine destructive fire with restorative power, allowing them to harm enemies while healing and protecting companions.
Their defining ability is **Summon Wildfire Spirit**.
By expending a use of Wild Shape, a Wildfire Druid can summon a supernatural spirit that embodies the destructive and regenerative properties of fire.
This spirit acts alongside the Druid, providing offensive capabilities and supernatural movement.
Through **Fiery Teleportation**, the spirit can transport itself and nearby willing creatures over a short distance, damaging enemies close to the space it leaves behind.
This makes the Wildfire Spirit valuable for repositioning companions, escaping dangerous situations, and manipulating the battlefield.
Wildfire Druids also gain access to additional spells associated with fire, healing, and restoration.
As they become more experienced, **Enhanced Bond** improves the damage of certain fire spells and the healing provided by their restorative magic while the Wildfire Spirit is present.
It also allows them to cast appropriate spells through the spirit's position, extending their ability to influence distant areas.
At higher levels, **Cauterizing Flames** allows them to create supernatural flames when nearby creatures die.
These flames can restore Hit Points to allies or damage enemies that move through them.
Their ultimate ability, **Blazing Revival**, allows the Wildfire Spirit to sacrifice itself when the Druid would otherwise fall unconscious, restoring a substantial portion of the Druid's vitality.
The Circle of Wildfire offers a distinctive combination of destructive magic, healing, and tactical movement.
For players who enjoy fire magic and the theme of renewal emerging from destruction, it provides a powerful and versatile approach to nature magic.
### Circle of the Shepherd
The Circle of the Shepherd consists of Druids who dedicate themselves to protecting animals and maintaining relationships with the spirits of nature.
Its members believe that living creatures deserve protection and that the natural world is strengthened through cooperation between different forms of life.
Unlike Druids who focus primarily upon personal transformation, Shepherd Druids specialise in summoning and supporting other creatures.
Their abilities allow them to communicate with animals and fey beings, improving their capacity to understand the needs and intentions of supernatural and ordinary creatures.
Their defining ability is **Spirit Totem**, which allows them to summon an incorporeal nature spirit that produces a beneficial magical aura.
The spirit can assume one of three forms.
**Bear Spirit** strengthens nearby creatures through supernatural vitality and protection.
**Hawk Spirit** assists combatants by helping them identify weaknesses and improve their attacks.
**Unicorn Spirit** enhances healing and provides additional support to creatures within its influence.
These options allow Shepherd Druids to adapt their support abilities according to the needs of the party.
As they become more experienced, **Mighty Summoner** improves the durability and attacks of eligible creatures summoned through magic.
**Guardian Spirit** further strengthens those creatures, allowing them to recover Hit Points while remaining within the protective influence of the Druid's Spirit Totem.
At higher levels, **Faithful Summons** provides an emergency defence when the Druid is incapacitated or reduced to 0 Hit Points, calling upon summoned Beasts to protect them.
These abilities create a fighting style built around cooperation between the Druid, their companions, and the creatures they summon.
The Circle of the Shepherd is a legacy subclass whose summoning features were written for the earlier versions of certain spells. Its interaction with revised summoning magic may therefore require clarification by the Dungeon Master.
For players who enjoy animal companions, nature spirits, summoning, and supporting allies through cooperative magic, the Circle of the Shepherd offers a distinctive approach to the Druid.
### Circle of Spores
The Circle of Spores consists of Druids who study fungi, decomposition, and the natural processes through which death gives rise to new life.
Its members understand that decay is not simply destruction. The breakdown of dead organisms returns nutrients to the environment, allowing plants and other living creatures to flourish.
Fungi play an important role in this process, transforming dead material into the foundations of future growth.
Spores Druids draw upon these natural principles, developing magical abilities associated with fungal growth, necrotic energy, and the animation of dead creatures.
Their defining early ability is **Halo of Spores**, which allows them to inflict Necrotic damage upon nearby enemies through supernatural fungal spores.
They also gain **Symbiotic Entity**, allowing them to expend a use of Wild Shape to empower themselves with a living mantle of magical fungi.
Unlike ordinary Wild Shape, this ability does not transform the Druid into an animal.
Instead, the spores strengthen their body, grant Temporary Hit Points, and increase the effectiveness of their attacks.
This makes Spores Druids unusually capable of engaging enemies at close range while retaining access to their ordinary spellcasting.
As they become more experienced, **Fungal Infestation** allows them to animate the corpse of a recently deceased humanoid as a temporary fungal servant.
This creature can assist during combat, representing the Druid's ability to manipulate the boundary between death and renewed activity.
At higher levels, **Spreading Spores** allows them to create a dangerous area of supernatural fungal growth that harms creatures entering or remaining within its influence.
Their ultimate ability, **Fungal Body**, provides protection against several dangerous conditions and prevents Critical Hits against them while they are not incapacitated.
These abilities make Spores Druids particularly effective at combining close-range combat with necrotic magic and battlefield control.
For players who enjoy fungi, decomposition, supernatural transformation, and the relationship between life and death, the Circle of Spores offers an unusual interpretation of nature magic.
### Circle of Dreams
The Circle of Dreams consists of Druids whose magic is closely connected to the Feywild and the supernatural powers associated with dreams, comfort, and restoration.
Its members often serve as protectors of peaceful places, guardians of hidden sanctuaries, or wanderers who bring healing and reassurance to those suffering from hardship.
Their abilities draw upon the magic associated with powerful fey, particularly the protective and restorative influences of the Summer Court.
Unlike Druids who focus heavily upon destructive spells or animal transformations, members of the Circle of Dreams specialise in supporting companions and protecting them from danger.
Their defining ability is **Balm of the Summer Court**.
Through this feature, the Druid gains a reserve of supernatural healing energy that can be used to restore Hit Points to nearby creatures.
The ability can also grant Temporary Hit Points, providing additional protection while conserving ordinary spellcasting resources.
As they become more experienced, **Hearth of Moonlight and Shadow** allows them to create a supernatural sanctuary during Short or Long Rests.
This protective area improves the party's ability to remain concealed and detect approaching threats, making it valuable when resting in dangerous environments.
The feature reflects the Druid's connection to the Feywild, where supernatural boundaries can conceal peaceful places from unwanted attention.
At higher levels, **Hidden Paths** allows the Druid to travel through magical pathways associated with fey creatures.
They can teleport themselves or transport a willing companion over short distances, providing useful mobility during combat and exploration.
Their ultimate ability, **Walker in Dreams**, grants access to powerful magic associated with supernatural communication, observation, and travel.
Through this feature, the Druid can cast Dream, Scrying, or a specialised version of Teleportation Circle without expending a spell slot.
The special teleportation effect allows the party to return to the location where the Druid last completed a Long Rest on the same plane of existence.
This makes the Circle of Dreams particularly effective at protecting companions, assisting with travel, and maintaining connections to important locations.
For players who enjoy Feywild themes, restorative magic, supernatural sanctuaries, and characters dedicated to providing comfort and protection, the Circle of Dreams offers a distinctive approach to the Druid.

## What It Feels Like to Play a Druid
Playing a Druid is about flexibility, preparation, and using the forces of nature to overcome extraordinary challenges.
Unlike classes that focus primarily upon weapons or a narrow collection of magical abilities, Druids possess several different ways to approach dangerous situations.
Their spellcasting provides powerful offensive, defensive, and restorative options.
Wild Shape allows them to adopt animal forms suited to exploration or combat, while their subclass abilities introduce additional ways to manipulate primal energy.
A Druid might begin a battle by summoning a supernatural effect that restricts enemy movement, then use Wild Shape to pursue an opponent attempting to escape.
During another encounter, they might remain in their ordinary form, using healing magic and elemental spells to support companions.
The class also rewards preparation.
Because Druids can change their prepared spells after completing a Long Rest, they can adapt their magical capabilities to suit different environments and challenges.
However, this flexibility requires understanding which abilities are most useful in a particular situation.
Wild Shape presents additional decisions.
You must consider which Beast forms to learn, when to transform, and whether preserving a use of Wild Shape for another ability would be more valuable.
Your chosen Circle also strongly influences your preferred approach to the class.
A Moon Druid becomes a powerful shapeshifting combatant, while a Land Druid focuses upon versatile spellcasting and environmental magic.
A Stars Druid can use luminous constellations to enhance attacks and healing, while a Sea Druid manipulates oceanic forces to control enemies.
Other Circles provide opportunities to specialise in summoning creatures, fungal magic, restorative Feywild powers, or the destructive and regenerative properties of fire.
These options allow two Druids to feel very different despite sharing the same fundamental connection to nature.
The class also provides considerable opportunities for character development.
You might play a guardian devoted to protecting an ancient forest, a travelling healer who assists isolated settlements, a scholar studying the movements of the stars, or a fierce protector determined to prevent the destruction of natural habitats.
A Druid does not need to reject civilisation or regard every settlement as a threat to the environment.
They might instead seek a balance between communities and wilderness, recognising that mortals are themselves part of the natural world.
What defines them is how they understand their connection to nature and the responsibilities they choose to accept because of it.

## Should You Play a Druid?
The Druid is an excellent choice for players who enjoy versatile spellcasting, animal transformations, and characters whose abilities are closely connected to the natural world.
You may enjoy the class if you like:
- Nature-themed and elemental magic
- Transforming into animals through Wild Shape
- Powerful healing and restorative abilities
- Battlefield control through plants, storms, and natural forces
- Summoning creatures and supernatural spirits
- Exploration, survival, and communicating with animals
- Preparing different spells for changing situations
- Customising a character through specialised Druid Circles
- Balancing spellcasting with transformation and martial abilities
- Characters who protect the natural world and its inhabitants
You may prefer another class if you are looking for straightforward martial combat, extensive heavy armour training, or abilities that require very little preparation and resource management.
Druids possess considerable versatility, but using their abilities effectively requires understanding spell preparation, Concentration, Wild Shape, and the different resources associated with their chosen Circle.
The large number of available spells and Beast forms can also make the class more demanding for players who prefer a simpler approach to combat.
However, this complexity provides opportunities for creativity.
A Druid can approach the same challenge through several different techniques, whether using magic, transformation, summoned creatures, or practical knowledge of the natural world.
For players who want to command storms, transform into beasts, protect their companions, and wield the ancient powers of nature, the Druid offers one of the most versatile and rewarding experiences in Dungeons & Dragons.
