## What Is a Barbarian?
The Barbarian is a powerful martial warrior who draws upon extraordinary strength, physical endurance, and primal fury to overcome dangerous enemies. While Fighters develop their abilities through formal combat techniques and specialised weapon training, Barbarians unleash a deeper source of power that allows them to push beyond the ordinary limitations of their bodies.
At first glance, a Barbarian might appear to be little more than a reckless warrior who charges into battle without considering the consequences. Although some embrace this aggressive approach, the class encompasses a much broader variety of personalities, professions, and traditions.
Some Barbarians are guardians who protect isolated communities against monsters and raiders. Others become hunters, mercenaries, gladiators, explorers, or wandering warriors whose extraordinary resilience allows them to survive environments that would overwhelm ordinary adventurers.
Their power is expressed through **Rage**, a supernatural or primal state that enhances their physical abilities and allows them to withstand tremendous punishment.
Despite its name, Rage does not necessarily represent uncontrolled anger. For some Barbarians, it manifests as intense concentration or an instinctive awareness of danger. Others experience it as the influence of ancestral spirits, the power of nature, or an extraordinary connection to forces that exist beyond ordinary mortal understanding.
Barbarians are among the most durable martial characters in Dungeons & Dragons. They possess exceptional Hit Points, formidable physical capabilities, and abilities that allow them to continue fighting despite injuries that would incapacitate less resilient warriors.
Their combat style frequently emphasises Strength-based attacks, aggressive positioning, and confronting dangerous enemies directly.
However, the revised Barbarian possesses considerable tactical flexibility, particularly through Weapon Mastery, Primal Knowledge, and Brutal Strike.
What defines a Barbarian is not their culture, temperament, or preferred weapon. It is their ability to channel extraordinary primal power when facing overwhelming danger.
---
## Life on the Edge of Civilisation
Barbarians are frequently associated with wilderness communities, isolated settlements, and regions where survival requires exceptional physical endurance.
Many originate from environments where dangerous creatures, unpredictable weather, and limited resources make strength and determination essential qualities.
Some are raised among nomadic clans that travel across open plains, deserts, or frozen tundras. Others live within mountain strongholds, deep forests, coastal settlements, or regions where civilisation maintains only a fragile presence.
Their experiences often provide practical knowledge of hunting, navigation, tracking, and surviving difficult conditions.
However, not every Barbarian comes from a remote community.
A gladiator who has spent years fighting within an arena may develop the same extraordinary fury as a warrior raised in the wilderness. A veteran soldier could awaken primal power after surviving a devastating battle, while a sailor might learn to draw upon overwhelming determination when confronting storms and dangerous creatures at sea.
Some Barbarians come from wealthy or influential backgrounds.
A noble who has endured exceptional hardship may discover a source of inner strength that conventional martial training cannot explain.
Others possess no interest in the wilderness at all, preferring to live among cities where their abilities are valued by mercenary companies, military organisations, or those requiring personal protection.
The cultures associated with Barbarians can influence how they interpret Rage.
One community may regard it as a spiritual blessing passed through generations of warriors, while another considers it an expression of the natural forces that govern the world.
Some Barbarians seek to understand the origin of their abilities, while others regard that knowledge as unimportant.
Their power also does not determine their intelligence, judgement, or personality.
A Barbarian can be a thoughtful leader, an experienced strategist, a quiet protector, or a skilled diplomat whose strength becomes apparent only when negotiation has failed.
The path of the Barbarian is not defined by rejecting civilisation or abandoning reason.
It is defined by developing the ability to draw upon extraordinary strength when circumstances demand it.
---
## The Power of Rage
The defining feature of the Barbarian is **Rage**, gained at first level.
Rage represents the manifestation of primal power through extraordinary physical strength, heightened instincts, and supernatural resilience.
Although often associated with anger, Rage can take many forms.
One Barbarian may become a roaring warrior whose aggression overwhelms ordinary fear. Another might enter a state of silent concentration, perceiving the battlefield with unusual clarity while focusing entirely upon the destruction of a dangerous enemy.
Some believe their Rage is influenced by ancestors or nature spirits. Others understand it as the awakening of power hidden within their bodies.
Under the revised rules, a Barbarian enters Rage using a Bonus Action, provided they are not wearing Heavy armour.
While raging, they gain several important benefits.
**Damage Resistance** allows the Barbarian to resist Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.
This protection is particularly valuable during direct combat, allowing them to survive repeated weapon attacks and physical injuries that would seriously threaten less resilient characters.
**Rage Damage** increases the damage inflicted by attacks that use Strength, including qualifying weapon attacks and Unarmed Strikes.
The additional damage begins at +2, increases to +3 at ninth level, and reaches +4 at sixteenth level.
**Strength Advantage** grants Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, improving the Barbarian's ability to overpower opponents and resist physical effects.
However, Rage also imposes restrictions.
A raging Barbarian cannot cast spells or maintain Concentration upon spells.
This creates important considerations for characters who possess spellcasting abilities through multiclassing, feats, or other supernatural features.
Rage initially lasts until the end of the Barbarian's next turn.
Unlike the older rules, the revised Barbarian can maintain Rage through several different activities.
They can extend its duration by making an attack roll against an enemy, forcing an enemy to make a saving throw, or using a Bonus Action to maintain their Rage.
These changes make Rage easier to sustain during encounters where enemies temporarily withdraw or become difficult to reach.
A Rage can last for up to ten minutes, although it normally ends early if the Barbarian becomes Incapacitated or puts on Heavy armour.
At first level, Barbarians possess two uses of Rage.
They regain one expended use after completing a Short Rest and recover all expended uses after a Long Rest.
As they gain experience, their maximum number of uses increases, eventually reaching six at seventeenth level.
Rage is therefore more than a temporary increase in damage.
It is the foundation of the Barbarian's combat abilities and an important resource that must be managed throughout an adventuring day.
---
## Strength and Endurance
Barbarians possess extraordinary physical durability.
They use a **d12 Hit Die**, the largest standard Hit Die available to a player-character class.
This provides considerable Hit Points and allows them to withstand injuries that might incapacitate less resilient adventurers.
Their defensive capabilities are strengthened by Rage, which reduces incoming Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.
Although Barbarians are commonly portrayed as warriors who fight without armour, they are not required to do so.
Their class training includes Light armour, Medium armour, and Shields.
Heavy armour interferes with Rage, making it unsuitable for characters who depend upon that ability.
At first level, Barbarians gain **Unarmored Defense**.
While not wearing armour, their Armour Class equals 10 plus their Dexterity and Constitution modifiers.
Unlike the Monk's equivalent ability, a Barbarian can use a Shield while benefiting from Unarmored Defense.
This allows different approaches to protection.
A Barbarian possessing high Dexterity and Constitution may fight effectively without conventional armour, while another might prefer Medium armour and a Shield.
The most effective choice depends upon the character's ability scores, equipment, and fighting style.
Their physical resilience also makes them effective at confronting powerful enemies directly.
A Barbarian can often endure repeated attacks while companions reposition, cast spells, or concentrate upon defeating other threats.
However, their durability is not unlimited.
Rage does not automatically protect against every damage type, and attacks involving elemental energy, psychic effects, or other supernatural forces can remain dangerous.
Their resistance also does not prevent conditions that interfere with movement, consciousness, or the ability to act.
A capable Barbarian therefore balances aggressive combat with an awareness of situations where ordinary strength may not provide sufficient protection.
---
## Weapon Mastery
At first level, Barbarians gain **Weapon Mastery**, representing their instinctive understanding of the weapons they wield.
Although their fighting style may appear less formal than that of a Fighter, Barbarians can develop considerable expertise in using weapons to overwhelm enemies.
Their training includes Simple and Martial weapons.
Through Weapon Mastery, they initially select two kinds of Simple or Martial Melee weapons whose mastery properties they can use.
Whenever they complete a Long Rest, they can change one of those selections, representing additional training or preparation.
As they gain experience, they become capable of using more mastery properties, eventually selecting four weapon types.
Different mastery properties provide different advantages.
**Cleave**, associated with weapons such as the Greataxe, can allow a successful attack to strike another nearby creature.
This is particularly useful when confronting groups of enemies.
**Graze**, associated with weapons such as the Greatsword, allows a character to inflict limited damage even when an attack misses.
This provides a degree of reliability when making powerful melee attacks.
**Push** can force an enemy away, creating opportunities to reposition opponents or prevent them from approaching vulnerable companions.
**Topple** allows certain weapons to knock an enemy Prone when the target fails an appropriate saving throw.
Other properties can interfere with an enemy's next attack, reduce movement speed, or improve the likelihood of landing a subsequent strike.
Weapon Mastery makes equipment selection an important tactical decision.
A Barbarian who favours a Greataxe may approach combat differently from one who uses a Maul or Greatsword.
The most suitable weapon depends upon the role the character intends to fulfil.
An aggressive warrior may favour consistent damage, while a protector might select weapons that interfere with enemy movement or attacks.
Weapon Mastery is particularly important when combined with the Barbarian's later Brutal Strike abilities.
Together, these features allow the class to influence combat through positioning and specialised effects rather than relying exclusively upon physical damage.
---
## Danger Sense
At second level, Barbarians gain **Danger Sense**, representing their extraordinary awareness of imminent threats.
Their instincts become so refined that they can react to danger before fully understanding what is happening.
Through this feature, they gain Advantage on Dexterity saving throws, provided they are not Incapacitated.
This is particularly useful when facing explosions, falling obstacles, dangerous traps, and magical effects that can be avoided through rapid movement.
Unlike the earlier version of the ability, the revised Danger Sense does not require the Barbarian to see or hear the effect.
Their instinctive reaction is sufficient to provide the benefit.
This makes them surprisingly capable of avoiding hazards that might overwhelm less experienced adventurers.
A Barbarian might instinctively move away from a collapsing structure, react to a concealed trap, or evade part of a destructive magical effect.
However, Danger Sense does not provide automatic immunity to damage.
The character must still make the saving throw, and a successful result may only reduce the harm suffered rather than eliminate it.
The ability also does not protect against every form of danger.
Effects requiring Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, or other saving throws are not automatically improved by Danger Sense.
Nevertheless, the feature reinforces an important aspect of the Barbarian's identity.
Their survival depends not only upon physical endurance but also upon instinctive reactions developed through experience.
---
## Reckless Attack
At second level, Barbarians gain **Reckless Attack**, allowing them to sacrifice defence in exchange for greater offensive reliability.
Through this feature, a Barbarian can attack with overwhelming aggression, deliberately exposing themselves to danger in order to strike more effectively.
When making their first attack roll on their turn, they can choose to attack recklessly.
Doing so grants Advantage on Strength-based attack rolls until the beginning of their next turn.
However, the decision carries an important disadvantage.
During the same period, attack rolls made against the Barbarian also have Advantage.
This creates a distinctive balance between aggression and survival.
A Barbarian who attacks recklessly becomes more likely to strike enemies, particularly those possessing high Armour Class.
However, opponents also become more likely to land attacks against them.
Rage helps compensate for this vulnerability by providing resistance to common physical damage types.
Nevertheless, a reckless attack can still be dangerous when confronting enemies capable of inflicting powerful elemental damage, harmful conditions, or repeated attacks.
The revised version of Reckless Attack also applies its benefits beyond the Barbarian's own turn.
Because the Advantage lasts until the beginning of their next turn, eligible Opportunity Attacks can benefit from the effect.
At higher levels, Reckless Attack becomes even more important because it interacts directly with Brutal Strike.
The Barbarian must decide whether retaining Advantage is more valuable than sacrificing it to produce additional damage and specialised effects.
Reckless Attack is therefore not simply a command to attack without thinking.
It is a deliberate tactical choice between offensive pressure and personal safety.
---
## Primal Knowledge
At third level, Barbarians gain **Primal Knowledge**, expanding their usefulness beyond direct combat.
Through this feature, they gain proficiency in one additional skill from the Barbarian class's available skill selection.
These skills include Animal Handling, Athletics, Intimidation, Nature, Perception, and Survival.
However, the more unusual benefit of Primal Knowledge involves the Barbarian's ability to channel primal power into certain skill checks.
While Rage is active, they can use Strength instead of the ability score normally associated with Acrobatics, Intimidation, Perception, Stealth, or Survival.
This represents extraordinary physical energy enhancing their movement, presence, and instincts.
A raging Barbarian attempting to intimidate an enemy might rely upon sheer physical menace rather than conventional social influence.
Another could move through difficult terrain using powerful muscles and instinctive coordination, or detect danger through heightened primal awareness.
The feature can also improve their effectiveness during exploration.
A Barbarian tracking dangerous prey might use Strength through Primal Knowledge when making an eligible Survival check, reflecting relentless physical determination and heightened instincts.
This allows the class to contribute to situations where other characters might ordinarily possess an advantage through Dexterity, Wisdom, or Charisma.
However, the feature still requires the relevant ability check.
It does not automatically grant proficiency in every listed skill or guarantee success.
The Barbarian must also maintain Rage while using the benefit, making the duration and available uses of Rage important considerations outside combat.
Primal Knowledge demonstrates that the Barbarian's power extends beyond striking enemies.
Their extraordinary physical abilities can also influence how they investigate, navigate, and interact with the world.
---
## Extra Attack and Fast Movement
At fifth level, Barbarians gain two important abilities: **Extra Attack** and **Fast Movement**.
Extra Attack allows the Barbarian to attack twice instead of once whenever they take the Attack action during their turn.
This significantly improves their offensive capabilities.
A Barbarian using a powerful melee weapon can deliver multiple attacks while benefiting from the additional damage provided by Rage.
When combined with Reckless Attack, these attacks can become more reliable, although the associated defensive risk remains.
Extra Attack also works with Weapon Mastery, allowing the Barbarian to apply different tactical effects during the same action when appropriate.
Fast Movement increases the Barbarian's Speed by ten feet while they are not wearing Heavy armour.
This improves their ability to reach enemies, reposition during combat, and pursue opponents attempting to escape.
Although Barbarians are often associated with heavily built warriors carrying large weapons, their mobility can become an important advantage.
A faster Barbarian can close the distance to dangerous spellcasters, move between groups of enemies, or reach companions threatened by approaching monsters.
At seventh level, Instinctive Pounce provides additional movement when entering Rage, further strengthening this aggressive mobility.
Together, Extra Attack and Fast Movement allow Barbarians to become more effective at reaching enemies and delivering sustained physical damage.
They reinforce the class's reputation as a warrior who is difficult to avoid and dangerous to confront directly.
---
## Feral Instinct and Instinctive Pounce
At seventh level, Barbarians gain **Feral Instinct**, representing their exceptional ability to recognise and respond to danger.
Through this feature, they gain Advantage on Initiative rolls.
This improves their chances of acting early when combat begins.
For a Barbarian, acting before an enemy can be particularly valuable.
An early turn may allow them to enter Rage, move into a defensive position, or confront a dangerous opponent before that creature attacks a vulnerable companion.
At the same level, they gain **Instinctive Pounce**.
Whenever the Barbarian enters Rage using a Bonus Action, they can move up to half their Speed as part of that same Bonus Action.
This movement provides an important opportunity to reach enemies without sacrificing their ordinary movement.
A Barbarian might use Instinctive Pounce to close the distance to an opponent who would otherwise remain outside melee range.
Alternatively, they might move toward a threatened ally or position themselves between enemies and the rest of the party.
Combined with Fast Movement, Instinctive Pounce makes experienced Barbarians more mobile than their heavily armed appearance might suggest.
These abilities reinforce the idea that Barbarians do not rely entirely upon absorbing attacks.
They possess powerful instincts and the capacity to act decisively when danger appears.
---
## Brutal Strike
At ninth level, Barbarians gain **Brutal Strike**, one of the most important additions to the revised class.
This feature replaces the older Brutal Critical ability.
Rather than concentrating exclusively upon increasing damage from Critical Hits, Brutal Strike allows Barbarians to exchange some attack accuracy for additional damage and tactical effects.
When using Reckless Attack, the Barbarian can choose to forgo the Advantage it grants on one eligible Strength-based attack roll during their turn.
The chosen attack cannot have Disadvantage.
If the attack hits, it inflicts an additional 1d10 damage of the same type as the weapon or Unarmed Strike.
The Barbarian can also apply one of two specialised effects.
**Forceful Blow** pushes the target fifteen feet directly away from the Barbarian.
The Barbarian can then move up to half their Speed toward the creature without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
This is particularly useful when attempting to push dangerous opponents away from companions or force enemies into unfavourable positions.
**Hamstring Blow** reduces the target's Speed by fifteen feet until the beginning of the Barbarian's next turn.
This can interfere with an enemy attempting to escape, pursue an ally, or reposition during combat.
At thirteenth level, **Improved Brutal Strike** introduces two additional options.
**Staggering Blow** imposes Disadvantage on the target's next saving throw and prevents it from making Opportunity Attacks until the beginning of the Barbarian's next turn.
This can create opportunities for companions to use powerful spells or other abilities requiring saving throws.
**Sundering Blow** creates an opening in the enemy's defences, granting a +5 bonus to the next attack roll made against that target by another creature before the beginning of the Barbarian's next turn.
This encourages cooperation and allows the Barbarian to help companions deliver important attacks.
At seventeenth level, Brutal Strike improves again.
The additional damage increases to 2d10, and the Barbarian can apply two different Brutal Strike effects to the same successful attack.
This creates opportunities to combine movement control, weakened saving throws, and assistance to nearby allies.
Brutal Strike makes the revised Barbarian considerably more tactical.
Rather than relying exclusively upon Rage and Reckless Attack to inflict damage, experienced Barbarians can manipulate the battlefield through carefully chosen offensive techniques.
---
## Relentless Rage
At eleventh level, Barbarians gain **Relentless Rage**, representing their extraordinary determination to continue fighting despite life-threatening injuries.
While Rage is active, when the Barbarian would be reduced to zero Hit Points without being killed outright, they can attempt a Constitution saving throw.
The initial Difficulty Class is 10.
On a successful saving throw, the Barbarian remains conscious and instead recovers Hit Points equal to twice their Barbarian level.
This represents an extraordinary recovery from an attack that would ordinarily leave the character unable to continue fighting.
However, the ability becomes progressively more difficult to use repeatedly.
Each time the Barbarian uses Relentless Rage after the first, the saving throw Difficulty Class increases by five.
The Difficulty Class resets to 10 after completing a Short or Long Rest.
This means that Relentless Rage cannot be relied upon indefinitely.
A Barbarian who repeatedly suffers devastating injuries may eventually fail the increasingly difficult saving throw.
Nevertheless, the ability dramatically improves their survivability during dangerous encounters.
At eleventh level, a successful use restores twenty-two Hit Points, allowing the Barbarian to remain in combat rather than immediately falling unconscious.
At higher levels, the amount recovered increases alongside the Barbarian's level.
Relentless Rage is particularly powerful when combined with resistance to physical damage and other defensive abilities.
It represents the class's extraordinary capacity to continue fighting when ordinary warriors would be forced to surrender.
---
## Persistent Rage
At fifteenth level, Barbarians gain **Persistent Rage**, allowing them to sustain their primal power with far greater reliability.
Under the revised rules, their Rage lasts for ten minutes without requiring additional actions or attacks to maintain it.
This removes the earlier need to extend Rage repeatedly through attacks, saving throw effects, or Bonus Actions.
The effect still ends early if the Barbarian becomes Unconscious or puts on Heavy armour.
However, merely becoming Incapacitated no longer ends Rage automatically through the ordinary duration rule at this level.
Persistent Rage also provides another important benefit.
Once before completing a Long Rest, the Barbarian can regain all expended uses of Rage when rolling Initiative.
This makes the class considerably more effective during demanding adventuring days.
A Barbarian who has exhausted their Rage uses during earlier encounters can recover their full reserve when another important battle begins.
This ensures that experienced Barbarians are less likely to face major combat encounters without access to their defining abilities.
Persistent Rage represents extraordinary mastery over primal energy.
What once required constant aggression or deliberate effort becomes a state that the Barbarian can maintain with remarkable consistency.
---
## Indomitable Might and Primal Champion
As Barbarians approach the height of their abilities, their physical strength develops beyond ordinary mortal limits.
At eighteenth level, they gain **Indomitable Might**.
Whenever the Barbarian makes a Strength check or Strength saving throw and the total result is lower than their Strength score, they can use their Strength score instead.
This greatly improves their reliability when performing tasks that depend upon physical power.
A powerful Barbarian might use this ability when forcing open a reinforced door, resisting an effect that attempts to move them, or escaping a dangerous physical restraint.
The feature does not guarantee success against every Difficulty Class, but it ensures that the character's extraordinary Strength remains consistently effective.
At nineteenth level, Barbarians gain access to an **Epic Boon**, representing an exceptional achievement appropriate to characters approaching the limits of mortal capability.
At twentieth level, they gain **Primal Champion**.
This feature increases the Barbarian's Strength and Constitution scores by four points each.
It also raises the maximum value of those abilities to 25.
These improvements strengthen several aspects of the class simultaneously.
Greater Strength improves attacks, damage, and physical ability checks, while increased Constitution improves Hit Points and saving throws associated with endurance.
For an unarmoured Barbarian, Constitution can also improve Armour Class.
Primal Champion represents the culmination of the Barbarian's connection to primal energy.
Their body has become an extraordinary expression of physical strength and resilience, capable of accomplishing feats beyond those of ordinary warriors.
---
## The Barbarian's Place in an Adventuring Party
Barbarians are among the most effective frontline warriors in an adventuring party.
Their combination of powerful melee attacks, extensive Hit Points, and resistance to common physical damage allows them to confront dangerous enemies directly.
Their most recognisable responsibility is absorbing attacks that might otherwise threaten less durable companions.
A Barbarian can position themselves near dangerous opponents, encouraging enemies to concentrate upon them while spellcasters and ranged combatants operate from safer positions.
However, they are not simply passive defenders.
Reckless Attack and Extra Attack allow them to maintain considerable offensive pressure, while Weapon Mastery provides opportunities to influence enemy movement and positioning.
At higher levels, Brutal Strike introduces additional tactical options.
A Barbarian can slow an enemy attempting to escape, push a dangerous creature away from a vulnerable ally, or create an opening that improves a companion's next attack.
Their capabilities outside combat have also improved through Primal Knowledge.
A Barbarian may become a capable tracker, intimidating negotiator, wilderness guide, or scout whose enhanced physical instincts provide valuable assistance.
Their chosen Primal Path can further influence the role they fulfil.
A Berserker may concentrate upon overwhelming enemies through aggressive attacks, while a Wild Heart Barbarian uses animal spirits to enhance defence and mobility.
A World Tree Barbarian can protect allies through supernatural vitality and manipulate positioning through spectral branches.
Other paths allow the Barbarian to channel storms, transform into a bestial creature, summon ancestral protectors, or wield elemental power associated with giants.
Although Barbarians do not possess the spellcasting versatility of Druids or the extensive martial techniques of Fighters, their extraordinary resilience and aggressive capabilities make them particularly valuable when direct confrontation cannot be avoided.
Their greatest contribution is the ability to remain dangerous even when facing overwhelming physical opposition.
---
## Primal Paths
As Barbarians develop their abilities, they discover that Rage can manifest through different supernatural traditions and forms of martial discipline.
At third level, a Barbarian chooses a subclass known as a **Primal Path**.
Each path represents a particular relationship with primal power, whether that power emerges from personal fury, ancestral spirits, divine influence, nature, or unusual magical forces.
Some paths focus upon improving damage and physical endurance, while others introduce supernatural transformations or abilities that protect companions.
### Path of the Berserker
The Path of the Berserker represents Barbarians who channel Rage into overwhelming martial aggression.
Unlike warriors who carefully preserve their strength throughout combat, Berserkers embrace the destructive power of their fury and use it to overwhelm enemies.
Their defining ability is **Frenzy**, gained at third level.
While Rage is active, using Reckless Attack allows the Berserker to inflict additional damage upon the first creature they hit with a Strength-based attack during their turn.
The additional damage is determined by rolling a number of d6s equal to the Barbarian's Rage Damage bonus.
Unlike the earlier version of the subclass, Frenzy no longer grants an additional Bonus Action attack or causes Exhaustion.
This makes the revised Berserker considerably more sustainable during prolonged adventures.
At sixth level, **Mindless Rage** grants immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions while raging.
If the Berserker is already affected by either condition when entering Rage, the condition ends.
This makes them particularly effective against creatures that attempt to manipulate emotions or overwhelm opponents through supernatural fear.
At tenth level, **Retaliation** allows the Berserker to strike back when damaged by a creature within five feet.
By using their Reaction, they can make a melee attack against the attacker.
At fourteenth level, **Intimidating Presence** allows them to project their fury outward, potentially frightening multiple nearby enemies through a terrifying supernatural display.
The revised feature uses Strength when calculating its saving throw Difficulty Class, reflecting the physical menace of the Berserker.
The Path of the Berserker is particularly suitable for players who enjoy aggressive melee combat, powerful attacks, and characters whose determination allows them to confront enemies without hesitation.
### Path of the Wild Heart
The Path of the Wild Heart represents Barbarians who draw upon the supernatural power of animal spirits.
This tradition was previously known as the **Path of the Totem Warrior**.
Its practitioners often believe that animals embody important qualities such as strength, vigilance, endurance, cunning, and loyalty.
Through spiritual connections with these creatures, Wild Heart Barbarians develop abilities that reflect different aspects of the natural world.
At third level, they gain **Animal Speaker**, allowing them to cast Beast Sense and Speak with Animals as Rituals.
This reflects their connection to animal spirits and provides useful abilities during exploration.
Their defining feature is **Rage of the Wilds**.
When entering Rage, they can draw upon one of several animal aspects.
**Bear** grants additional resistance to selected damage types, improving the Barbarian's resilience against particular threats.
**Eagle** enhances mobility, making it easier to move rapidly and escape dangerous positions.
**Wolf** improves the effectiveness of nearby allies who attack enemies within the Barbarian's reach.
Unlike the older Totem Warrior, the revised Wild Heart can change these benefits when entering Rage rather than remaining permanently committed to one animal.
At sixth level, **Aspect of the Wilds** grants specialised abilities associated with animal spirits, including enhanced skills, mobility, and environmental awareness.
These benefits can be changed after completing a Long Rest.
At tenth level, **Nature Speaker** improves their spiritual connection to the natural world through Commune with Nature.
At fourteenth level, **Power of the Wilds** provides additional supernatural benefits associated with different animal aspects.
These can improve the Barbarian's ability to protect companions, move through the air, or knock dangerous enemies Prone.
The Path of the Wild Heart is particularly suitable for players who enjoy animal spirits, nature-themed warriors, and adapting their combat abilities to different circumstances.
### Path of the World Tree
The Path of the World Tree represents Barbarians whose Rage connects them to **Yggdrasil**, the great cosmic tree whose branches extend across the multiverse.
Unlike paths that focus exclusively upon offensive power, World Tree Barbarians use their supernatural connection to protect companions, manipulate enemy positioning, and move across extraordinary distances.
At third level, they gain **Vitality of the Tree**.
When entering Rage, they gain Temporary Hit Points equal to their Barbarian level.
While Rage remains active, they can also grant Temporary Hit Points to another nearby creature at the beginning of each of their turns.
This allows World Tree Barbarians to support companions while continuing to fight on the front line.
At sixth level, **Branches of the Tree** allows them to manifest spectral branches that influence nearby creatures.
By using their Reaction, they can teleport a creature toward themselves when that creature begins its turn within the feature's range.
The ability can also reduce the target's movement speed to zero, making it useful for preventing enemies from escaping or reaching vulnerable companions.
At tenth level, **Battering Roots** improves their weapon attacks.
Spectral branches increase the reach of attacks made with eligible Heavy or Versatile melee weapons.
The feature also allows them to use the Push or Topple mastery property alongside a weapon's normal mastery effect.
At fourteenth level, **Travel Along the Tree** grants supernatural teleportation.
While raging, the Barbarian can teleport themselves across the battlefield.
Once during each Rage, they can perform a more powerful teleportation that carries several willing companions with them.
This makes World Tree Barbarians capable of extraordinary battlefield repositioning.
The Path of the World Tree is particularly suitable for players who enjoy powerful defenders, supernatural movement, and supporting companions through the protective forces of the multiverse.
### Path of the Zealot
The Path of the Zealot represents Barbarians whose fury is empowered by divine influence.
Their Rage may be understood as a blessing from a deity, a manifestation of sacred purpose, or an extraordinary connection to divine forces.
Unlike Paladins, who gain power through sacred oaths, Zealot Barbarians channel divine energy through primal fury.
At third level, they gain **Divine Fury**.
While raging, the first creature they strike during their turn suffers additional Radiant or Necrotic damage.
The extra damage increases alongside the Barbarian's level, making the ability particularly valuable during direct combat.
They also gain **Warrior of the Gods**.
Under the revised rules, this ability provides a pool of healing dice that the Barbarian can expend to restore their own Hit Points using a Bonus Action.
This replaces the older benefit that primarily made the character easier to resurrect.
At sixth level, **Fanatical Focus** strengthens their ability to resist dangerous effects.
When failing a saving throw during Rage, the Zealot can reroll it and gain a bonus determined by their Rage Damage.
At tenth level, **Zealous Presence** allows them to unleash an inspiring battle cry.
Selected nearby allies gain Advantage on attack rolls and saving throws for a short period, making the ability particularly effective during important encounters.
At fourteenth level, **Rage of the Gods** transforms the Zealot into a supernatural warrior.
The feature grants extraordinary movement and defensive benefits, including flight and additional damage resistance.
It also allows the Barbarian to prevent themselves or an ally from being reduced to zero Hit Points under certain circumstances.
The Path of the Zealot is particularly suitable for players who enjoy divine warriors, extraordinary resilience, and characters whose Rage reflects religious devotion or sacred purpose.
### Path of the Storm Herald
The Path of the Storm Herald represents Barbarians whose Rage manifests through elemental forces associated with powerful natural storms.
Their abilities reflect the destructive energy of deserts, oceans, and frozen wilderness.
Unlike conventional Barbarians whose fury primarily strengthens their physical capabilities, Storm Heralds surround themselves with supernatural elemental effects.
At third level, they gain **Storm Aura**.
When entering Rage, they create an aura that produces effects associated with one of three environments: Desert, Sea, or Tundra.
**Desert** releases Fire damage against creatures within the aura, representing the destructive heat of a scorching wasteland.
**Sea** allows the Barbarian to direct Lightning damage against a creature within range.
**Tundra** grants Temporary Hit Points to selected nearby creatures, representing protective supernatural cold.
The chosen environment also influences later subclass abilities.
At sixth level, **Storm Soul** grants resistance to an elemental damage type and additional environmental benefits.
A Desert Storm Herald becomes more resistant to heat, while a Sea Storm Herald develops abilities associated with swimming and underwater survival.
A Tundra Storm Herald gains protection against extreme cold.
At tenth level, **Shielding Storm** extends certain protective benefits to allies within the Barbarian's Storm Aura.
At fourteenth level, **Raging Storm** allows the elemental aura to produce additional offensive or defensive effects.
These may punish enemies who attack the Barbarian, knock opponents Prone, or restrict enemy movement.
The Path of the Storm Herald remains a legacy subclass from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
For players who enjoy elemental warriors, supernatural weather effects, and characters whose Rage manifests as a living storm, the Storm Herald provides a distinctive approach to primal combat.
### Path of the Beast
The Path of the Beast represents Barbarians whose Rage awakens animalistic or monstrous physical characteristics.
Their abilities may originate from lycanthropic ancestry, ancient curses, druidic transformations, or supernatural influences associated with powerful beasts.
Unlike Druids, who transform into separate animal forms through Wild Shape, Beast Barbarians retain their general identity while developing dangerous natural weapons.
At third level, they gain **Form of the Beast**.
Whenever they enter Rage, they can manifest one of several bestial features.
**Bite** creates a powerful natural weapon that can help restore Hit Points under the appropriate circumstances.
**Claws** allow the Barbarian to perform additional claw attacks when using the Attack action.
**Tail** provides a natural weapon with greater reach and allows the Barbarian to use their Reaction to improve their Armour Class against an incoming attack.
These transformations allow the Barbarian to adapt their abilities to different combat situations.
At sixth level, **Bestial Soul** strengthens their natural weapons and improves their movement through climbing, swimming, or extraordinary jumping capabilities.
At tenth level, **Infectious Fury** allows them to channel unsettling primal energy into enemies struck by their natural weapons.
This can inflict additional Psychic damage or compel an affected creature to attack another target.
At fourteenth level, **Call the Hunt** allows the Barbarian to strengthen nearby companions through their bestial transformation.
This grants Temporary Hit Points and additional offensive benefits, reflecting the supernatural bond between the Barbarian and their hunting companions.
The Path of the Beast remains a legacy subclass from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
For players who enjoy monstrous transformations, natural weapons, and characters whose Rage reveals an extraordinary predatory nature, the Path of the Beast provides a powerful and flexible martial tradition.
### Path of Wild Magic
The Path of Wild Magic represents Barbarians whose primal fury is influenced by unpredictable supernatural energy.
Their powers may originate from exposure to the Feywild, powerful magical events, ancient enchantments, or other forces that have permanently altered their connection to magic.
Unlike ordinary spellcasters, Wild Magic Barbarians do not normally control their supernatural power through conventional spells.
Instead, magical effects emerge spontaneously when they enter Rage.
At third level, they gain **Magic Awareness**.
This allows them to open their senses to nearby magical influences, identifying the presence of spells and magical items within the feature's range.
Their defining ability is **Wild Surge**.
Whenever they enter Rage, they roll upon a special Wild Magic table that determines which supernatural effect manifests.
These effects can include teleportation, magical protection, damaging energy, or unusual environmental phenomena.
Unlike the Sorcerer's Wild Magic Surge table, the Barbarian's Wild Surge effects are generally designed to be beneficial or tactically useful.
However, their random nature means that the character cannot always predict which ability will appear.
At sixth level, **Bolstering Magic** allows the Barbarian to provide magical assistance to themselves or another creature.
This can improve certain attack rolls and ability checks or restore limited spellcasting resources to an ally.
At tenth level, **Unstable Backlash** allows them to trigger another Wild Magic Surge when threatened during combat.
At fourteenth level, **Controlled Surge** improves their influence over the unpredictable magic.
Instead of accepting only one randomly determined effect, they can roll twice and choose which result to use.
The Path of Wild Magic remains a legacy subclass from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
For players who enjoy unpredictable magic, unusual supernatural effects, and combining martial combat with the chaotic forces of the multiverse, the Path of Wild Magic offers a distinctive fighting style.
### Path of the Ancestral Guardian
The Path of the Ancestral Guardian represents Barbarians who draw strength from the spirits of their ancestors.
Its practitioners often belong to cultures that preserve the memories and teachings of past generations, regarding their departed relatives as guardians whose influence continues beyond death.
However, ancestral spirits do not necessarily need to appear as members of a particular family.
They may represent ancient warriors, respected predecessors, or spiritual protectors associated with a community.
At third level, these Barbarians gain **Ancestral Protectors**.
While raging, the first creature they strike during their turn becomes affected by spectral guardians.
The target suffers Disadvantage on attacks against creatures other than the Barbarian, and allies struck by the affected creature gain resistance to its damage.
This makes Ancestral Guardians particularly effective at protecting companions.
Rather than simply absorbing damage themselves, they interfere with enemies attempting to attack vulnerable party members.
At sixth level, **Spirit Shield** allows the Barbarian to summon ancestral spirits to protect another creature nearby.
By using their Reaction, they can reduce damage suffered by an ally.
At tenth level, **Consult the Spirits** allows them to seek guidance from ancestral forces through magic associated with Augury and Clairvoyance.
This provides unusual investigative and supernatural utility outside ordinary combat.
At fourteenth level, **Vengeful Ancestors** strengthens Spirit Shield.
When the Barbarian prevents damage through their ancestral protection, the attacker also suffers Force damage.
The Path of the Ancestral Guardian remains a legacy subclass from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
For players who enjoy spiritual warriors, ancestral traditions, and protecting companions through supernatural guardians, this path offers one of the Barbarian's strongest defensive specialisations.
### Path of the Battlerager
The Path of the Battlerager represents warriors who embrace relentless aggression and the use of specialised spiked armour.
This tradition is particularly associated with dwarven berserkers known as **Kuldjargh**, whose fighting style combines physical toughness with a willingness to confront dangerous enemies at close range.
Unlike ordinary Barbarians who may prefer fighting without armour, Battleragers deliberately use spiked equipment to injure opponents during close combat.
At third level, they gain **Battlerager Armor**.
This allows them to use specialised spiked armour as an offensive weapon while raging.
They can make an additional attack with their armour spikes through a Bonus Action and inflict Piercing damage upon creatures they successfully grapple.
This makes the Battlerager particularly effective during aggressive close-quarters fighting.
At sixth level, **Reckless Abandon** grants Temporary Hit Points when the Barbarian uses Reckless Attack while raging.
This provides additional resilience when deliberately exposing themselves to enemy attacks.
At tenth level, **Battlerager Charge** allows the Barbarian to take the Dash action using a Bonus Action while raging.
This improves their ability to pursue enemies and close the distance during combat.
At fourteenth level, **Spiked Retribution** causes enemies who strike the Barbarian with nearby melee attacks to suffer damage from their armour spikes while the relevant conditions are satisfied.
These abilities create a fighting style based upon remaining close to enemies, inflicting repeated physical damage, and punishing opponents who attempt to overpower the Barbarian.
The Path of the Battlerager is a legacy subclass from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.
Its original rules present Battleragers as a dwarf-specific tradition, although the Dungeon Master may permit other characters to adopt the path.
The subclass also relies upon older equipment and combat assumptions, so its interactions with the revised rules require particular care.
For players who enjoy aggressive dwarven warriors, spiked armour, grappling, and relentless close-range combat, the Battlerager provides a distinctive martial tradition.
### Path of the Giant
The Path of the Giant represents Barbarians who channel the ancient elemental power of giants.
Their supernatural abilities allow them to grow to enormous size, manipulate elemental energy, and overpower enemies through extraordinary physical force.
Unlike ordinary Barbarians, whose strength remains confined to their natural bodies, Giant Barbarians can temporarily transform themselves into towering warriors whose attacks threaten a much larger area.
At third level, they gain **Giant's Power**, granting knowledge of the Giant language and limited magical abilities associated with the primordial forces of giantkind.
They also gain **Giant's Havoc**.
While raging, the Barbarian can become Large, increase their reach, and improve attacks made with thrown weapons.
This provides significant advantages when confronting enemies across a wide battlefield.
A Giant Barbarian can threaten creatures that would ordinarily remain outside their melee reach and inflict additional damage through thrown weapons.
At sixth level, **Elemental Cleaver** allows them to empower a weapon with supernatural elemental energy.
This can change the damage type of the weapon, inflict additional damage, and allow it to return after being thrown.
The feature strengthens the Barbarian's ability to fight at a distance without abandoning their focus upon physical weapons.
At tenth level, **Mighty Impel** allows them to seize creatures and hurl them across the battlefield.
This can be used to reposition enemies, protect companions, or throw opponents into dangerous terrain.
At fourteenth level, **Demiurgic Colossus** greatly improves their giant transformation.
The Barbarian can become Huge, strengthen the damage provided by Elemental Cleaver, and use Mighty Impel against larger creatures.
The Path of the Giant was introduced in Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants.
For players who enjoy giant mythology, elemental weapons, enormous transformations, and warriors who overpower enemies through extraordinary physical strength, the Path of the Giant offers one of the most imposing Barbarian traditions.

## What It Feels Like to Play a Barbarian
Playing a Barbarian is about strength, determination, and making decisive choices when confronting dangerous enemies.
Unlike spellcasters, whose abilities often depend upon selecting from extensive collections of magic, Barbarians focus primarily upon physical combat and a smaller number of powerful techniques.
Their defining ability, Rage, provides both offensive and defensive benefits.
Entering Rage allows the Barbarian to inflict additional damage while reducing the harm suffered from many conventional attacks.
However, their effectiveness depends upon more than simply activating Rage and attacking.
Reckless Attack introduces an important decision between accuracy and personal safety.
A Barbarian who attacks recklessly may strike enemies more reliably, but they also become easier to hit.
Weapon Mastery creates additional opportunities to influence combat.
You might use a Greataxe to strike multiple enemies, a Maul to knock a creature Prone, or another weapon whose properties help control enemy movement.
At higher levels, Brutal Strike introduces further tactical possibilities.
You must decide whether maintaining Advantage is more valuable than sacrificing it to produce additional damage and weaken an opponent.
The class also possesses extraordinary survivability.
Relentless Rage can prevent the Barbarian from falling unconscious, while Persistent Rage makes their defining abilities more reliable during prolonged encounters.
Outside combat, Primal Knowledge allows you to channel physical power into certain skill checks.
This makes Barbarians more versatile than characters whose abilities are limited entirely to fighting.
Your chosen Primal Path also has a considerable influence upon how the class feels to play.
A Berserker focuses upon overwhelming enemies through aggressive attacks, while a Wild Heart Barbarian uses animal spirits to adapt to different situations.
A Zealot becomes an extraordinarily resilient divine warrior, while a World Tree Barbarian protects companions through supernatural vitality and movement.
Other paths allow you to manipulate storms, transform into a bestial creature, command ancestral spirits, manifest unpredictable magic, or wield the power of giants.
These different traditions provide many opportunities for character development.
You might play a fierce protector who defends their people, a quiet warrior whose Rage emerges only during moments of danger, or a wandering champion who seeks opponents capable of challenging their strength.
Another Barbarian might be a thoughtful leader, a spiritual guardian, or an ordinary individual who has discovered an extraordinary source of power through personal hardship.
Not every Barbarian must be reckless, unintelligent, or driven by uncontrolled anger.
Their abilities can represent fierce emotion, spiritual conviction, survival instinct, or an exceptional capacity for physical concentration.
What defines the class is the ability to unleash extraordinary power when confronted by overwhelming danger.

## Should You Play a Barbarian?
The Barbarian is an excellent choice for players who enjoy powerful martial combat, extraordinary physical resilience, and characters whose abilities are rooted in primal strength.
You may enjoy the class if you like:
- Frontline combat and powerful melee weapons
- High Hit Points and exceptional physical durability
- Reducing incoming damage through Rage
- Increasing attack reliability through Reckless Attack
- Weapon Mastery and battlefield control
- Overwhelming enemies through physical strength
- Developing extraordinary survival instincts
- Protecting companions from dangerous opponents
- Spiritual, bestial, elemental, and giant-themed abilities
- Characters associated with ancient traditions or primal power
- Straightforward core mechanics with additional tactical options
- Exploring themes of determination, instinct, fury, and resilience
You may prefer another class if you are looking for extensive conventional spellcasting, a fighting style based primarily upon ranged attacks, or a character whose abilities depend upon magical preparation rather than physical combat.
Barbarians are relatively straightforward to understand at lower levels, but their revised abilities provide more tactical depth as they gain experience.
Reckless Attack requires careful judgement, particularly when confronting enemies capable of inflicting substantial damage.
Weapon Mastery and Brutal Strike create additional opportunities to manipulate combat through positioning, movement, and specialised effects.
Although Barbarians are exceptionally durable, they are not invulnerable.
Powerful spells, harmful conditions, and enemies capable of exploiting their weaknesses can remain dangerous.
Their greatest strength is the ability to confront overwhelming threats while continuing to contribute powerful attacks and battlefield control.
For players who want to stand face-to-face with dangerous monsters, withstand tremendous punishment, and unleash extraordinary primal strength, the Barbarian remains one of the most iconic and rewarding martial classes in Dungeons & Dragons.
