Unlike Wizards, who study magic, or Sorcerers, who possess innate magical talent, Warlocks receive their abilities through a connection to a powerful patron. This patron might be a fiend, an archfey, a celestial being, an ancient cosmic entity, or something even stranger. The exact nature of the relationship varies from character to character. Some Warlocks willingly sought out power. Others stumbled into a pact by accident, inherited it through a family connection, or accepted it during a moment of desperation. Whatever the circumstances, the pact has changed them forever. --- ## Power From Beyond A Warlock's abilities are tied to an Otherworldly Patron. These beings exist far beyond the capabilities of ordinary mortals and grant magical knowledge, supernatural gifts, or fragments of their power to chosen individuals. A Warlock might be: - A scholar who uncovered forbidden secrets - A traveller who bargained with a powerful fey - A survivor saved by an otherworldly entity - A descendant of an ancient pact - A seeker of knowledge willing to pay any price - A champion chosen by a celestial being Not every Warlock views their patron the same way. Some are loyal servants. Others see the relationship as a partnership, a business arrangement, or even a burden they would rather escape. The pact is important, but what a character does with that power is entirely their own choice. --- ## Pact Magic Warlocks cast spells using a unique system known as **Pact Magic**. Unlike most spellcasters, Warlocks have a very small number of spell slots. However, those spell slots are always cast at the highest level available to them and return after a **short rest** rather than a long rest. This creates a very different playstyle from other spellcasters. Rather than managing a large pool of magical resources throughout the day, Warlocks focus on making the most of a smaller number of powerful spells. They are often at their best when combining spells, class features, and invocations to create highly specialised builds. Their spellcasting is based on **Charisma**, reflecting the force of personality needed to wield the power granted by their pact. --- ## Eldritch Blast No discussion of the Warlock is complete without mentioning **Eldritch Blast**. This cantrip is one of the class's defining features and serves as a reliable source of damage throughout a campaign. As Warlocks gain levels, Eldritch Blast becomes more powerful and can be enhanced through Eldritch Invocations to gain additional effects. Many Warlock builds revolve around improving and supporting this signature spell. --- ## Eldritch Invocations Perhaps the most distinctive Warlock feature is **Eldritch Invocations**. These are permanent magical abilities that represent unique gifts granted through the Warlock's pact. Invocations can provide benefits such as: - Enhanced spellcasting - Improved Eldritch Blast attacks - Supernatural senses - Additional spells - The ability to read all languages - Communication with animals or the dead - Magical disguises - Flight or invisibility Because players can choose different Invocations, Warlocks are among the most customisable classes in the game. Two Warlocks with the same Patron can feel completely different in play. --- ## The Warlock's Role in an Adventuring Party Warlocks are versatile spellcasters capable of filling several different roles. Depending on their Patron, Pact Boon, and Invocations, they may function as: - Damage dealers - Battlefield controllers - Face characters - Utility spellcasters - Scouts - Melee combatants Their flexibility allows them to specialise in a particular style while still retaining useful magical options. --- ## Otherworldly Patrons At 1st level, every Warlock chooses an Otherworldly Patron. ### The Fiend Fiend Warlocks gain power from devils, demons, or other infernal beings. Their abilities often focus on destructive magic, survival, and overwhelming force. --- ### The Archfey Archfey Warlocks serve powerful fey creatures. Their magic emphasises charm, illusion, mobility, and manipulation. --- ### The Great Old One These Warlocks draw power from ancient entities beyond mortal understanding. Their abilities often involve telepathy, secrets, and strange psychic powers. --- ### The Celestial Celestial Warlocks form pacts with angels, unicorns, or other radiant beings. They gain access to healing abilities alongside their magical powers. --- ### The Hexblade Hexblades are connected to mysterious forces tied to magical weapons and shadowy power. They combine martial combat with supernatural magic. --- ### The Undead These Warlocks draw power from powerful undead entities or forces associated with death. Their abilities often make them difficult to frighten, kill, or permanently stop. --- ## Pact Boons At 3rd level, Warlocks receive a Pact Boon that further shapes their abilities. ### Pact of the Chain Gain an enhanced familiar with unique abilities and forms. ### Pact of the Blade Create and wield a magical weapon tied to your pact. ### Pact of the Tome Receive a magical book that expands your spellcasting options and magical knowledge. ### Pact of the Talisman Gain a supernatural charm that offers protection and assistance. These choices significantly influence how a Warlock plays throughout a campaign. --- ## What It Feels Like to Play a Warlock Playing a Warlock is about making the most of a unique set of tools. You have fewer spell slots than other spellcasters, but you recover them more frequently. Your Invocations provide powerful customisation options, and your Patron helps define both your abilities and your character's story. Warlocks reward players who enjoy combining different class features to create specialised and distinctive characters. Whether you focus on Eldritch Blast, melee combat, utility magic, or social interaction, the class offers a wide range of possibilities. --- ## Should You Play a Warlock? The Warlock is an excellent choice if you enjoy: - Characters with built-in story hooks - Highly customisable abilities - Charisma-based spellcasting - Unique magical mechanics - Powerful cantrips and specialised builds - Mysterious supernatural themes You may prefer another class if you are looking for: - Large numbers of spell slots - A wide spell selection - Traditional arcane study - Simpler character building decisions For players who enjoy powerful themes, unique mechanics, and building a character around a supernatural bargain, the Warlock offers one of the most distinctive experiences in Dungeons & Dragons.
