**Lesser Deity**
**Alignment**: Lawful Good
### Overview
Heironeous, known as _The Invincible_, _The Archpaladin_, and _The Valorous Knight_, is the intermediate deity of chivalry, justice, honour, war, daring, and valour. An ancient god of the Oeridian peoples of Oerth, he embodies the ideals of righteous warfare, courage, honourable conduct, and the defence of the innocent. His followers believe that true heroism requires more than martial ability, demanding integrity, compassion, and the willingness to confront evil regardless of personal danger.
Heironeous is a noble and determined deity who regards the world as a place of continual trials. He teaches that hardship must be confronted with courage and discipline, and that those possessing strength have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable. Unlike gods who glorify conquest or indiscriminate slaughter, Heironeous regards warfare as justified when undertaken in defence of justice, freedom, and goodness.
Heironeous is traditionally depicted as a tall, handsome human man with copper-coloured skin, auburn hair, and amber eyes. He wears a magnificent suit of finely crafted chainmail that moves as freely as ordinary clothing. His skin possesses extraordinary supernatural protection, granted through a divine substance known as _meersalm_, which was applied to his body shortly after birth. He is traditionally associated with a powerful magical battleaxe, although he has increasingly favoured the longsword as a symbol of the knights, paladins, and common soldiers who serve him.
His greatest enemy is **Hextor**, the lawful evil god of war, tyranny, and discord, who is also his half-brother. Their opposition represents the conflict between honourable warfare and military domination. While Heironeous believes that strength must serve justice, Hextor teaches that strength establishes authority and that victory justifies the methods employed to achieve it.
Heironeous is widely worshipped by paladins, knights, soldiers, judges, guards, and individuals dedicated to defending the innocent. His religion is particularly influential within lands that maintain strong traditions of lawful government, military service, and organised resistance against evil.
### Domain and Influence
Heironeous's divine authority encompasses chivalry, justice, honour, warfare, daring, and valour. His teachings establish that strength and martial skill must be governed by moral responsibility. Courage without restraint can become recklessness, while obedience without justice can become tyranny. His followers are therefore expected to combine bravery with wisdom, fairness, and compassion.
The central doctrine of his faith is expressed through the **Heironean Code**, a chivalric tradition governing the conduct of his worshippers. The code establishes three principal duties.
**Duty to the People** requires courage, justice, mercy, and the protection of the weak. Followers must defend the innocent, uphold righteous laws, and remain faithful to religious superiors acting as officers of just authority.
**Duty to the Archpaladin** requires devotion to Heironeous, obedience to legitimate religious authority, generosity, and the active opposition of evil. His followers must demonstrate their beliefs through meaningful action and place the obligations of their faith above personal ambition.
**Duty to a Lady** concerns courtly love, devotion to one's beloved, and respect toward women. This tradition forms part of the established chivalric customs of his priesthood and reflects the importance placed upon honourable personal conduct.
Although the church is united by these principles, its members sometimes disagree over the relationship between law and justice. Two recognised interpretations are particularly influential.
The **Lawgivers** believe that a consistent and impartial system of laws is essential to justice. They maintain that no individual, regardless of wealth or authority, should stand above the law.
The **Justicebringers** believe that justice itself is the highest obligation and that laws possess value only when they serve that purpose. They argue that an unjust law may need to be challenged rather than obeyed.
These factions maintain a largely peaceful rivalry within the church, although their disagreements can influence appointments, religious judgements, and the interpretation of the Heironean Code.
Heironeous maintains strong relationships with other benevolent deities, particularly **Al'Akbar**, **Allitur**, **Bahamut**, **Daern**, **Delleb**, **Fortubo**, **Johydee**, **Mayaheine**, **Murlynd**, **Pelor**, **Pholtus**, **Rao**, **St. Cuthbert**, **Zilchus**, and **Zodal**. He is especially close to Murlynd, the ascended hero whose elevation to divine status he sponsored.
His strict commitment to lawful conduct occasionally creates disagreements with **Trithereon**, whose teachings place greater emphasis upon personal liberty. He also finds **Olidammara** frustrating, although he tolerates the trickster's behaviour because of his charm and humour.
His enemies include **Hextor**, **Erythnul**, **Iuz**, **Vecna**, **Tharizdun**, **Tiamat**, **Kyuss**, and other divine powers associated with cruelty, tyranny, corruption, and the deliberate destruction of innocent life.
Heironeous's divine realm is the **Fields of Glory**, situated within **Venya**, the third layer of Mount Celestia. This celestial dominion embodies righteous courage, honour, and disciplined service. Its inhabitants include virtuous warriors and devoted souls who continue their existence among the benevolent powers of the Seven Heavens.
### Symbols and Icons
![[HerioneousSymbol.png|300]]
Heironeous's principal holy symbol is a silver lightning bolt, frequently depicted within a clenched fist. The lightning represents divine power and decisive action, while the fist symbolises courage, strength, and the determination necessary to confront evil.
His followers display this emblem upon shields, armour, banners, ceremonial garments, and religious objects. The lightning bolt is particularly important among his military orders, whose members frequently carry it into battle as a declaration of their allegiance.
Blue and silver are the traditional colours of his clergy. Priests commonly wear blue robes trimmed with silver over finely crafted chainmail. These garments reflect the combination of religious devotion and martial service expected of the faith.
His traditional weapon is the **battleaxe**, associated with his early divine manifestations. The **longsword** has also become important, reflecting his desire to appeal to a broader community of honourable warriors. His personal longsword is known as _Justicebringer_.
Both the battleaxe and longsword are recognised weapons of his clergy, symbolising the obligation to wield strength in the service of justice rather than personal ambition.
### Worship and Tributes
Heironeous's worship centres upon honour, courage, justice, discipline, and the protection of others. His followers believe that devotion must be demonstrated through conduct, particularly when confronted with danger, temptation, or difficult moral decisions.
Religious ceremonies frequently involve triumphant battle hymns, prayers in Old Oeridian, offerings before copper statues of Heironeous, and communal feasts. These gatherings traditionally include hearty meals, red wine consumed in moderation, and spiced kara-fruit.
Weapons, armour, coin, and other valuables may be donated to temples in gratitude for victories or divine protection. Such contributions support the church's religious, charitable, and military activities. Priests also offer prayers before important battles, asking for courage, discipline, and the strength to act justly.
Established religious observances include:
- **The Tests of Valor**: Before advancing within the priesthood, followers must demonstrate courage, honour, and justice through trials revealed by prayer or divine visions. These may involve tests of endurance, personal sacrifices, or dangerous missions against evil. Their purpose is to establish whether a priest is worthy of greater responsibility.
- **Recognition of Heroism**: Acts of exceptional bravery are commemorated through religious ceremonies. Warriors may receive medals or other decorations recognising their courage, sometimes awarded after death. Such honours recognise actions that demonstrate the ideals of Heironeous rather than military victory alone.
- **Newmass**: Celebrated on **Fireseek 1**, this observance marks the beginning of the new year. Worshippers reflect upon their conduct during the preceding year, exchange gifts, and renew their commitment to honourable behaviour.
- **The Day of Just Rebellion**: Observed on **Coldeven 18**, this holy day commemorates the struggles that freed Almor from the oppressive authority of the Great Kingdom. Its ceremonies consider the circumstances under which resistance to established government becomes a righteous obligation.
- **Justday**: Celebrated on **Coldeven 20**, this observance requires followers to correct an injustice. The act may involve acknowledging a personal wrongdoing, assisting someone treated unfairly, or confronting a greater abuse of power.
- **The Feast of Edoira**: Observed on **Growfest 4** within the Domain of Greyhawk, this interfaith celebration honours Edoira. Some followers of Heironeous participate alongside worshippers of Pelor and Rao.
- **Fortnight's Feast**: Celebrated from **Wealsun 25 to Reaping 4**, this festival commemorates the Battle of a Fortnight's Length, during which the armies of the Kingdom of Aerdy defeated Nyrondal cavalry. The observance originated as a celebration of Heironean military victories. As the Great Kingdom declined into tyranny, its religious significance changed, and the festival became increasingly associated with jousting, martial tournaments, historical reenactments, and the recounting of honourable victories.
- **Saint Ferrante's Day**: Observed on **Patchwall 28**, this festival honours the legendary paladin Ferrante. His likeness is carried in public processions, food is shared, and sweets are distributed to children. The celebration preserves the popular account of Ferrante as an exemplary champion of Heironeous.
- **Valormight**: Celebrated on **Ready'reat 25**, this festival commemorates an ancient ten-month war in which Heironean forces, despite being outnumbered six to one, prevented Hextorian armies from expanding westward beyond the Flanmi River.
- **Communion**: Observed on **Sunsebb 10**, this is a day of quiet introspection, during which worshippers examine their conduct and consider how faithfully they have upheld their obligations.
Heironeous's religion also preserves several important sacred writings.
**The Book of the Code** is the principal religious text of the faith. It consists of four chapters explaining the Heironean Code and presenting examples of honourable conduct, justice, and religious duty.
**The Book of Penitence**, also known as _The Just Book_, recounts the deeds of Ferrante, a legendary paladin revered as a saint by certain Heironean traditions. Its teachings emphasise the strength of character required to overcome temptation and remain devoted to justice.
However, the commonly circulated Book of Penitence does not contain the complete account of Ferrante's life. A secret, unabridged version known as **the Original Book of Penitence** is preserved by a small circle within the church. It records a disturbing conclusion to his history that is concealed from the wider faith.
The church also preserves numerous numbered teachings known as **Analects**, which provide concise instruction concerning courage, endurance, duty, and honourable conduct.

### Clergy and Temples
Heironeous's clergy consists primarily of clerics, crusaders, specialty priests, monks, paladins, and individuals devoted to the enforcement of righteous law. The church maintains a strongly organised hierarchy, reflecting its emphasis upon discipline, duty, and legitimate authority.
Many priests begin their training as pages under experienced clerics or paladins. Those who demonstrate promise become squires before receiving full religious responsibilities. Their education combines martial training, religious instruction, the study of law, and practical experience defending others.
Novices are known as **the Blessed**, while fully ordained priests are called **the Glorious**. The clergy as a whole is frequently referred to as the **Valorous Host**.
Recognised ranks include **Hero of the Third Rank**, **Hero of the Second Rank**, **Hero of the First Rank**, **Champion of Glory**, **Knight Gallant**, **Knight Courageous**, **Knight Valiant**, and **Knight Champion**.
Senior priests are known as **Paragons**, while those commanding church armies may bear the title **Paragon-General**. These ranks are distinct from clerical responsibilities and institutional titles such as postulant, novitiate, templar, hierodeacon, and abbot.
An important tradition within the priesthood is that of the **Gloryaxes**, the specialty priests of Heironeous. These devoted servants receive extensive martial training and develop supernatural abilities that enhance their effectiveness against evil.
Gloryaxes possess exceptional resistance to magical fear and can invoke blessings associated with courage, protection, and physical strength. As their devotion and experience increase, they gain additional powers that strengthen their combat abilities and their capacity to confront supernatural enemies. Their name preserves Heironeous's longstanding association with the battleaxe.
Older clerics frequently serve as judges, military instructors, strategists, and advisers to rulers. Younger members are more likely to undertake dangerous missions, escort vulnerable travellers, and confront organisations devoted to evil.
Heironeous's temples are generally constructed as fortified castles, capable of serving as defensive strongholds during emergencies. Their interiors feature blue and silver decorations, stained-glass windows depicting heroic victories, and chambers dedicated to religious instruction. Many possess extensive training grounds where knights practise jousting and soldiers conduct military exercises.
His church is especially influential in **Nyrond** and the **Shield Lands**, where it has long been associated with lawful government and organised resistance against evil. The religion is also prominent in **Bissel**, **Furyondy**, **Gran March**, **Irongate**, **Keoland**, **Sterich**, and the **County of Urnst**.
Among its important religious institutions are the **Sanctum of Heironeous** in the Free City of Greyhawk, the **Spire of Glory** in Chendl, and the **Shield Reclaimed** in Critwall. These temples serve as centres of worship, military preparation, and charitable assistance.
Several religious and military orders serve Heironeous.
**The Knights of Holy Shielding** are among the most renowned knightly followers of Heironeous. Their traditions are closely associated with the defence of the Shield Lands against Iuz and his forces.
**The Order of the Shining Sword**, **the Brotherhood of the Lance Unbroken**, and **the Copper Crusaders** are established military orders whose traditions preserve the martial heritage of the church.
**The Topaz Order**, formally known as the _Holy Order of the Supernal Topaz Defenders_, is dedicated to confronting dangerous aberrations, including mind flayers, beholders, aboleths, grell, and neogi. Its emblem is a brilliant yellow topaz upon a cobalt-blue field.
**The Order of the Glory Everlasting** consists of fighting monks dedicated to preserving Oeridian culture and opposing the Brotherhood of the Gray Hand, a rival order devoted to Hextor.
**The Order of the True Strike** honours **Saint Handraleo the Swift**, a celebrated paladin associated with the faith.
**Murlynd's White Paladins** maintain connections to Heironeous's religious hierarchy, reflecting the continuing relationship between the Archpaladin and the ascended hero.
**The Order of the Chalice** is a distinguished knightly organisation dedicated to driving fiends from the Material Plane. Its members confront demons, devils, yugoloths, and other creatures whose activities threaten mortal civilisation.
The order was founded in **−626 CY** by the paladin **Arbinget Ivenay**, following a divine revelation concerning a sacred object known as the Chalice of Heironeous. Most members believe the Chalice to be an extraordinary relic associated with the blood of a celestial warrior.
Its leadership consists of the **Nine Masters of the Chalice**, whose highest-ranking members are known as the **Lightning Councilors**. Their headquarters, the **Eyrie of Heironeous**, preserves the order's most closely guarded secrets.
The Lightning Councilors know that the true Chalice is not an ordinary religious artifact. Their order was established to rescue a divine prisoner, whose identity remains concealed from the ordinary membership. Although the wider organisation now dedicates itself to fighting fiends throughout the world, its original mission remains central to its highest leadership.
### Powers and Abilities
Heironeous possesses extraordinary divine powers associated with righteous warfare, courage, justice, protection, and the destruction of evil. His abilities reflect his nature as an exceptionally skilled divine warrior and defender of lawful goodness.
His principal abilities include:
- **Divine Martial Prowess**: Heironeous possesses extraordinary combat skill and physical strength. His mastery of weapons allows him to confront powerful supernatural enemies directly.
- **The Protection of Meersalm**: Shortly after his birth, his skin was anointed with a secret divine preparation known as meersalm. This substance rendered him almost impervious to physical injury, protecting him from all but the most powerful weapons.
- **Justicebringer**: Heironeous wields a magnificent enchanted longsword associated with divine justice and honourable combat. Its supernatural properties make it especially effective against evil and incorporeal enemies.
- **The Divine Battleaxe**: Heironeous also possesses a powerful magical battleaxe capable of shrinking to a fraction of its normal size. This allows him to conceal the weapon while travelling in disguise and restore it to full size when required.
- **Divine Lightning**: Heironeous possesses supernatural abilities associated with lightning and electrical energy. His power can be directed against enemies and is reflected in the lightning bolt that forms his holy symbol.
- **Positive Energy**: Heironeous can unleash destructive bursts of positive energy, particularly effective against undead creatures and beings associated with negative energy.
- **Divine Protection**: Heironeous can grant supernatural protection to those who defend the innocent, strengthening their resistance to harm and hostile magic.
- **Courage and Resolve**: His blessings can help followers overcome fear, resist supernatural influence, and remain steadfast when confronted with overwhelming danger.
- **Divine Manifestations**: Heironeous can appear in several forms, including a young child, an ordinary mercenary soldier, or an elderly man. These disguises allow him to move among mortals without revealing his identity.
- **Command of Celestial Servants**: Heironeous is served by powerful celestial beings. A solar may act as his herald, while hound archons, trumpet archons, and other servants of Mount Celestia may assist his followers.
Several sacred relics are associated with his faith.
**The Helm of the Purple Plume** is a golden helmet decorated with a large purple feather. Originally awarded as a prize during jousting tournaments, it symbolises exceptional bravery and honour. Its enchantments strengthen the wearer's confidence and protect against supernatural fear. Attempts to instil fear instead inspire renewed courage.
**The Sword of Virtue Beyond Reproach** is a golden longsword decorated with rubies. It possesses holy enchantments and can protect its wielder against magical attempts to influence or control the mind. Four such swords were commissioned from celestial dwarves by the paladin **Tardalius the Headstrong**, who later presented them to his four sons.
**The Armour of Stern Alia** is not a relic belonging to Heironeous's own church, but it possesses considerable importance within the mythology of his family. Its extraordinary protective powers contributed to one of the earliest disputes between Heironeous and Hextor.
These objects reflect the importance of courage, moral integrity, and resistance to evil within Heironeous's religious traditions.
### Treatment of the Chosen and Faithful
Heironeous treats his followers with fairness and expects them to demonstrate courage, integrity, discipline, and compassion. He does not regard martial strength alone as sufficient evidence of devotion. His faithful must also act honourably, obey legitimate authority, and protect those unable to defend themselves.
His teachings encourage followers to confront danger directly rather than abandon their responsibilities. Individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage may receive religious recognition or divine assistance, although such rewards are not guaranteed.
His treatment of devoted followers is reflected in several established traditions:
- **Blessings of Courage**: Faithful warriors may receive supernatural protection against fear, strengthening their resolve during battle.
- **Divine Guidance**: Heironeous may communicate through visions or religious signs, particularly when his followers must undertake important tests of courage or justice.
- **The Tests of Valor**: Clerics seeking advancement must demonstrate their worthiness through divinely guided challenges. Their accomplishments establish their readiness to accept greater religious responsibilities.
- **The Gifts of the Gloryaxes**: Specialty priests may receive blessings that strengthen their resistance to fear, increase their physical resilience, and improve their ability to combat evil.
- **Recognition of Heroism**: Exceptional warriors may receive medals, decorations, or public recognition from the clergy. Such honours may be granted posthumously to those who died defending others.
- **Protection Against Evil**: Divine magic granted through Heironeous can protect the innocent, strengthen defenders, and assist in defeating supernatural enemies.
- **Punishment for Dishonour**: Followers who knowingly violate the Heironean Code may lose religious standing and be required to undertake acts of penance. Grave betrayals of justice can result in the loss of divine favour.
- **The Fate of the Faithful**: Souls devoted to Heironeous may enter the Fields of Glory upon Mount Celestia, where they continue their existence among the benevolent powers of the Seven Heavens.
Some powerful clerics have attempted to reproduce the supernatural protection granted to Heironeous at birth. Through a dangerous ritual, they have allowed themselves to be embalmed alive using meersalm. A few survived and acquired extraordinary protection, but others perished during the attempt.
Heironeous is closely associated with the elevation of exceptional mortal champions. His sponsorship of Murlynd's ascension demonstrates his willingness to recognise extraordinary service and assist worthy individuals in achieving divine status.
Although the church possesses numerous knightly orders and celebrated heroes, it does not maintain a single universally established order of mortals formally designated as the Chosen of Heironeous.
### Myths and Legends
Heironeous's mythology is closely connected to his family, his ancient rivalry with Hextor, the origins of his invulnerability, and the accomplishments of legendary champions who served his faith.
- **The Birth of the Invincible**: Heironeous and Hextor were born to **Stern Alia**, the goddess of Oeridian culture, motherhood, and law, who is also known as the Shield Mother. The brothers had different fathers. According to tradition, Stern Alia anointed Heironeous with a divine substance called _meersalm_ shortly after his birth, making his skin almost impervious to injury. Hextor received no such blessing, creating the jealousy that would eventually contribute to their bitter rivalry.
- **The Betrayal of Savnok**: When Heironeous and Hextor were young, their mother entrusted them with guarding her divine weapons and armour. A servant named **Savnok** persuaded the brothers to allow him to watch over the armoury. Once alone, he put on Stern Alia's armour and discovered that its magic rendered him virtually invulnerable. Savnok fled to the mortal world, where he attempted to establish a kingdom through conquest. Heironeous and Hextor pursued him, but the armour protected him from their attacks. Hextor eventually retrieved their mother's bow and arrows and used them to kill Savnok. Rather than confess their failure, Hextor persuaded Heironeous to conceal the incident. Heironeous reluctantly agreed and subsequently regretted the deception.
- **The Fall of Hextor**: As the brothers grew older, their differing beliefs and temperaments became increasingly apparent. Heironeous embraced justice, mercy, and honourable warfare, while Hextor sought domination through strength and fear. Resenting his brother's divine protection, Hextor made a bargain with the Lords of Evil, gaining two additional pairs of arms and greatly increasing his combat abilities. Their rivalry eventually became an enduring conflict between opposing divine philosophies.
- **The Rivalry of the Brothers**: In ancient Oeridian society, the competition between the followers of Heironeous and Hextor was initially considered beneficial, encouraging military achievement and the development of competing political ideals. Over time, however, their conflict became increasingly bitter. The rise of tyranny within the Great Kingdom transformed their religious rivalry into a struggle involving entire nations and armies.
- **The Turmoil Between Crowns**: During the civil war that devastated the Great Kingdom between **437 and 446 CY**, the followers of Heironeous suffered increasing persecution. Powerful champions abandoned the corrupted kingdom and sought refuge in Nyrond and neighbouring lands. The conflict further strengthened the association between Heironeous and resistance to oppressive government.
- **The Chalice of Heironeous**: One of the most closely guarded secrets of the faith concerns Heironeous's daughter, a young goddess-angel known as the Chalice of Heironeous. According to a revelation delivered by a solar to the paladin Arbinget Ivenay, Hextor kidnapped the divine child and surrendered her to **Dispater**, the archdevil ruling the Iron City of Dis. To conceal his own responsibility and secure his captive, Hextor entrusted her imprisonment to the archdevil. Ivenay established the Order of the Chalice to rescue her, but the truth of her identity remains known only to the order's highest leadership. Most members believe they seek an extraordinary holy relic. The Lightning Councilors preserve the knowledge that the Chalice is a living divine being and that her prison lies within Dispater's Iron Tower.
- **The Deeds of Saint Ferrante**: Ferrante was a legendary paladin who lived before the establishment of the Kingdom of Aerdy. His adventures included confronting the Two-Headed Hound of Sthalash, battling the Endless Wyrm, and resisting the magical temptations of **Kahabros**, a powerful servant of Hextor and Ferrante's own half-brother. His accomplishments are preserved within the _Book of Penitence_. The commonly accepted account maintains that Ferrante eventually sailed across the Solnor Ocean upon a great crusade and was never seen again. Many worshippers believe he continues to serve Heironeous somewhere beyond the known world.
- **The Corruption of Saint Ferrante**: The secret account of Ferrante's fate differs greatly from the public traditions of the church. Despite his earlier devotion and accomplishments, Ferrante ultimately succumbed to Kahabros's temptations and became corrupted by evil. Heironeous himself struck down his fallen champion with a bolt of divine glory and sealed him within a supernatural crystal casket. The corrupted Ferrante endured as a terrifying undead creature resembling a death knight, consumed by hatred for the followers of his former god. His imprisonment prevented him from carrying out his desire to destroy the faithful of Heironeous.
- **The Secret Doctrine of the Bastion of Faith**: The truth concerning Ferrante is preserved within an unabridged religious work known as the **Original Book of Penitence**, held in secret by a small inner circle called the **Fellowship of Penitence**. Ferrante's remains are concealed within catacombs beneath a temple known as the **Bastion of Faith**. The surviving original account is incomplete, and more than a hundred missing pages remain with Ferrante's former companion, **Onwald Sidney**, who is buried within the same catacombs. The key to Ferrante's crystal prison is also hidden there. The public church remains largely unaware that its celebrated saint became one of the very creatures its faith exists to oppose.
- **The Legacy of Arnd of Tdon**: Arnd was an ancient Oeridian hero who preceded Ferrante by several centuries. He is credited with establishing the first order of paladins among the Oeridian tribes before the Great Migrations. His accomplishments form an important part of the early religious history of Heironeous and establish that the faith possessed notable champions long before Ferrante's lifetime.
- **The Ascension of Murlynd**: Murlynd was a mortal hero and paladin whose extraordinary accomplishments earned the favour of Heironeous. With the Archpaladin's assistance, he eventually attained divine status. Murlynd continues to maintain a close relationship with his former patron, and his White Paladins remain associated with Heironeous's religious hierarchy.
- **The Death of Stratis**: Another son of Stern Alia, **Stratis**, was a god associated with warfare who became involved in the conflicts of western Oerik. Unlike Heironeous and Hextor, Stratis represented warfare without being exclusively devoted to either good or evil. His eventual death left an important vacancy among the divine powers associated with war.
These traditions demonstrate that Heironeous's history is not solely concerned with perfect virtue. His youthful involvement in concealing Savnok's actions, the betrayal of Hextor, and the corruption of Ferrante illustrate the importance of moral responsibility, repentance, and the consequences of dishonour within his religious teachings.
### Encounters with Heironeous's Influence
Heironeous's influence is encountered through knightly orders, fortified temples, righteous military campaigns, judicial institutions, and individuals dedicated to opposing tyranny and protecting the innocent.
- **Fortified Temples**: Religious strongholds dedicated to Heironeous often serve as training centres, places of refuge, and defensive positions during attacks by evil forces.
- **The Valorous Host**: Clerics and paladins may undertake military expeditions against tyrannical rulers, dangerous cults, and supernatural threats. Their actions are governed by the Heironean Code.
- **The Gloryaxes**: These specialty priests combine martial discipline with divine blessings associated with courage and protection. They may accompany religious armies or undertake missions against exceptionally dangerous enemies.
- **The Knights of Holy Shielding**: These knights are associated with the defence of the Shield Lands and the continuing struggle against Iuz and his servants.
- **The Tests of Valor**: Followers seeking advancement may undertake dangerous quests to prove their courage, judgement, and devotion to justice.
- **The Topaz Order**: Members of this religious order actively confront aberrations and other unnatural creatures threatening mortal civilisation.

- **Sacred Relics**: Objects such as the Helm of the Purple Plume and Sword of Virtue Beyond Reproach may be entrusted to exceptional champions or recovered from the possessions of fallen knights.
- **The Bastion of Faith**: This religious stronghold preserves a dangerous secret concerning Saint Ferrante. Those investigating his history may uncover evidence contradicting the official accounts of his disappearance, potentially threatening the church's understanding of one of its most celebrated saints.
- **The Sanctum of Heironeous**: Visitors to the Free City of Greyhawk may encounter priests, paladins, and military leaders preparing expeditions, providing training, or organising assistance for threatened communities.
- **The Fields of Glory**: Planar travellers entering Heironeous's divine realm may encounter celestial warriors, virtuous petitioners, and the supernatural inhabitants of Mount Celestia.
### Conclusion
Heironeous is the intermediate deity of chivalry, justice, honour, war, daring, and valour, and one of the most important divine champions of lawful goodness within the World of Greyhawk. His teachings emphasise courage, discipline, mercy, and the responsibility of the strong to defend those unable to protect themselves.
His religion maintains an extensive tradition of knightly orders, fortified temples, and military service. Through the Heironean Code, his followers are expected to combine martial ability with honourable conduct and to place justice above personal ambition.
His ancient conflict with Hextor remains central to his divine history, representing the opposition between righteous warfare and tyranny. The teachings preserved through their rivalry demonstrate the dangers of jealousy, pride, and the misuse of strength.
The fall of Saint Ferrante reveals that even the most celebrated servants of Heironeous can succumb to corruption. His fate serves as a warning that honour cannot be preserved through reputation alone and that devotion requires continued moral discipline.
Heironeous's relationships with Stern Alia, Murlynd, Pelor, Bahamut, and other benevolent powers establish his importance among the gods who oppose evil. His sponsorship of mortal heroes and association with celebrated paladins demonstrate his willingness to recognise extraordinary courage and virtue.
The Archpaladin's enduring purpose is the defence of justice through honourable action. His faithful believe that true heroism is demonstrated not merely by defeating enemies, but by protecting the innocent, resisting corruption, and remaining steadfast in the face of danger.
