### Overview
**Juiblex**, known throughout the Lower Planes as **the Faceless Lord**, is an ancient demon lord whose dominion encompasses the slimes, oozes, jellies, puddings, and other amorphous horrors inhabiting the Abyss. Its existence is defined by relentless consumption, corruption, and the dissolution of living matter into shapeless substance. Unlike the great demon princes whose ambitions concern political supremacy, military conquest, or the subjugation of mortal civilisations, Juiblex possesses little interest in the conventional rewards of power. It seeks to destroy, corrode, and consume whatever falls within its reach, finding satisfaction in the reduction of living creatures and solid matter to the same foul substance from which its own body is formed.
Among the rulers of the Abyss, Juiblex occupies a peculiar and frequently misunderstood position. Many demon lords regard it with contempt, considering the Faceless Lord little more than an enormous, mindless accumulation of filth. Its apparent indifference toward political influence and its lack of an impressive court have earned it the derisive title **the Lord of Nothing**. Yet this reputation conceals the fact that Juiblex possesses considerable intelligence and an awareness of its surroundings far beyond that of the ordinary oozes it commands. Its simple desires should not be mistaken for an inability to reason, and the disdain of other demon princes has often allowed it to remain undisturbed while they exhaust their strength in endless struggles for supremacy.
Juiblex embodies a form of evil fundamentally different from the deliberate cruelty of **Graz'zt**, the consuming ambition of **Orcus**, or the divided madness of **Demogorgon**. It has little interest in admiration, reverence, or personal recognition, and it displays no desire to transform the Abyss into a kingdom governed through elaborate institutions. Its hatred of other creatures is expressed through destruction rather than political domination, while its capacity for suffering and cruelty remains undiminished by the apparent simplicity of its goals. To the Faceless Lord, living beings possess no inherent worth beyond their capacity to be destroyed, absorbed, or transformed into substances resembling itself.
Although Juiblex possesses comparatively few mortal worshippers, its influence extends beyond the Abyss through the supernatural corruption of living creatures and the activities of individuals who willingly surrender themselves to its power. Such followers are often driven by madness, despair, or an obsessive fascination with the dissolution of physical form. Their devotion may grant extraordinary abilities associated with disease, corrosion, and bodily transformation, but it offers little assurance of protection or recognition. Juiblex frequently remains unaware of those who worship it, treating their lives and deaths with the same indifference it displays toward nearly every other creature in existence.

### Domain and Influence
Juiblex inhabits **Shedaklah**, the **222nd layer of the Abyss**, a vast realm of rotting vegetation, poisonous fungi, corrosive sludge, and immense subterranean caverns. The layer is shared with **Zuggtmoy**, the Demon Queen of Fungi, whose dominion extends across much of its surface. Shedaklah lies between two sluggish branches of the **River Styx**, and its landscape consists of marshes, low hills, foul pools, and immense forests of fungal growth. Above this decaying expanse hangs a sky filled with clouds of brown and sickly green, from which polluted rain falls at irregular intervals. A persistent layer of moisture covers nearly everything, encouraging the unnatural growth and decomposition that characterise the realm.
The surface of Shedaklah is principally associated with Zuggtmoy, whose fungal servants occupy immense forests of monstrous toadstools and other grotesque vegetation. Beneath this landscape, however, lie the **Slime Pits of Juiblex**, a network of enormous chasms and caverns in which the Faceless Lord exercises its greatest authority. Five vast slime-filled openings break through the surface near the limits of Zuggtmoy's territory, their contents displaying unnatural shades of olive, mustard, green, ochre, and grey. These chasms descend into the depths of the layer, where immense concentrations of oozes and jellies move through subterranean passages whose walls and floors are coated in living slime.
Within the deepest caverns, the distinction between terrain and creature becomes increasingly uncertain. Pools that appear to contain ordinary liquid may conceal enormous puddings, while apparently solid surfaces can suddenly move as the amorphous beings spread across them rise to engulf intruders. Some passages are so densely occupied by oozes that a traveller must force a path through living gelatinous matter to continue. The air is heavy with foul vapours, while corrosive substances drip from the surrounding stone and collect in stagnant lakes. Few creatures can survive for long within these chambers, and even powerful demons generally avoid venturing into the depths unless compelled by circumstances beyond their control.
Juiblex maintains no magnificent fortress comparable to the palaces of other Abyssal princes. Its domain is instead an enormous accumulation of living sludge, surrounded by countless amorphous creatures whose forms and appetites reflect its own. The absence of an elaborate court is entirely consistent with its nature, for Juiblex has little interest in the monuments, treasures, and ceremonial displays through which other demon lords demonstrate their authority. Its power is expressed through the overwhelming concentration of creatures inhabiting the Slime Pits and its ability to direct them against anything that intrudes upon its territory. These servants require little organisation, for their natural instincts already compel them to consume whatever they encounter.
Juiblex is also associated with **Molor**, the **528th layer of the Abyss**, known as **the Stinking Realm**. Unlike the deepest Slime Pits, Molor contains miserable settlements inhabited by creatures whose continued existence appears almost as repulsive as the surrounding environment. Its landscapes consist of unstable mud, rotting structures, accumulations of refuse, and vast passages filled with diseased water. Among its settlements is **Thullgrime**, a squalid community whose inhabitants endure filth, sickness, and the constant danger presented by the layer's monstrous creatures. Their survival does not suggest the presence of any benevolent authority, for the realm offers little beyond the opportunity to continue an existence dominated by misery and decay.
Molor also contains the extraordinary **Maw of Eternity**, a mysterious opening concealed within its subterranean passages. The Maw resembles an immense, seemingly bottomless pit, and those who enter may be carried through an unusual planar passage to destinations beyond the Stinking Realm. Its true origin remains uncertain, although speculation has connected it with the ancient history of Juiblex and the possibility that the Faceless Lord did not originate within the familiar regions of the Abyss. No definitive account establishes such a connection, and the Maw remains one of the many mysteries surrounding the demon lord's earliest existence. These descriptions of Molor belong principally to later planar traditions and should be distinguished from the older accounts centred upon Shedaklah.

### Symbols and Icons

The traditional symbol of **Juiblex** is a **raised pseudopod dripping slime**, an emblem whose grotesque simplicity reflects the physical nature of the Faceless Lord. Unlike the elaborate religious symbols associated with more ambitious demon princes, this mark possesses little ceremonial dignity or visual complexity. Its shape resembles a portion of Juiblex's own amorphous body, suggesting the extension of a corrosive mass toward something it intends to consume. The symbol is rarely displayed openly, largely because the demon lord possesses so few organised mortal worshippers. Those who do employ it may carve the design into crude altars or reproduce it upon objects associated with their worship, although no universally established system of sacred colours or elaborate iconography is attributed to its cults.
Juiblex possesses no stable humanoid form. Its body is an immense, continually shifting accumulation of gelatinous matter streaked with black, green, brown, yellow, and other foul colours. Numerous crimson eyes appear across its surface, moving through the slime without remaining fixed in any recognisable arrangement. At times the Faceless Lord rises into a towering mass resembling an enormous cone or mound, while at others it spreads across the ground until its substance becomes difficult to distinguish from the surrounding pools. Its ability to alter its dimensions and proportions makes the identification of a permanent shape almost meaningless, for its entire body remains capable of flowing, expanding, and contracting according to its needs.
The Faceless Lord's most distinctive features are its **numerous red eyes** and the powerful pseudopods that emerge from its body. These appendages can extend toward nearby creatures, delivering crushing blows while coating victims in corrosive substances capable of dissolving flesh and equipment. Juiblex possesses no conventional skeleton or internal arrangement of organs, allowing its substance to move through narrow openings that would prevent the passage of creatures with rigid bodies. Its appearance is therefore profoundly unsettling even by the standards of the Abyss, where monstrous anatomy is commonplace. To behold Juiblex is to encounter a creature whose entire existence appears to reject the distinction between an individual living being and the shapeless matter surrounding it.

### Worship and Tributes
The worship of Juiblex is exceptionally uncommon, even among the evil religions associated with the Lower Planes. Most mortal cults seek supernatural patrons capable of granting wealth, influence, revenge, or some other recognisable reward, but the Faceless Lord offers little assurance that its followers will receive anything of value. It possesses no interest in cultivating a powerful mortal religion, and its natural servants already provide most of the assistance it requires. Nevertheless, certain individuals become devoted to it, particularly those whose fascination with filth, disease, and bodily corruption has separated them from ordinary society. Such followers may regard the dissolution of physical identity as a form of liberation, believing that abandonment of their former bodies will allow them to participate in the unnatural existence of their master.
Devotion to Juiblex frequently involves acts of deliberate corruption and the destruction of living creatures through acidic or gelatinous substances. Its worshippers may gather dangerous oozes within abandoned caverns, sewers, and subterranean ruins, maintaining these monsters as sacred creatures or instruments of sacrifice. Unlike the priests of more conventional religions, they possess little need for magnificent temples or public ceremonies, for their activities are rarely tolerated by the surrounding population. Their sanctuaries are consequently isolated and foul, often containing the remains of creatures dissolved during earlier rituals. The presence of such places demonstrates that worship of the Faceless Lord is concerned less with communal religion than with the individual surrender of moral restraint and ordinary bodily existence.
Among the few established rites associated with its worship is the initiation required of a **Thrall of Juiblex**. The prospective devotee must have experienced a supernatural change of form and must participate in a ceremony involving the sacrifice of an intelligent creature. The victim is dissolved through acid in the presence of at least three oozes, slimes, or puddings, demonstrating the initiate's willingness to destroy another being through the substances held sacred by the cult. The rite possesses no apparent purpose beyond the deliberate embrace of cruelty and corruption, but its completion establishes the individual's dedication to the Faceless Lord. Those who survive such ceremonies may subsequently develop supernatural abilities associated with their patron, although these powers do not necessarily indicate that Juiblex has personally acknowledged their devotion.
---
### Clergy and Cults
Juiblex possesses no recognised universal priesthood and maintains none of the elaborate religious organisations associated with more politically ambitious demon lords. Its followers generally operate alone, for their appearance, habits, and supernatural corruption make sustained association with ordinary mortals exceptionally difficult. Even those who possess similar beliefs may find one another intolerable, particularly when their bodies begin producing the foul substances associated with deeper service to the Faceless Lord. Nevertheless, the absence of an organised church does not mean that its worshippers lack recognisable traditions. The most distinctive are the **Thralls of Juiblex**, individuals who deliberately cultivate bodily corruption and acquire powers resembling those of the amorphous creatures they revere.
As a thrall advances in its unnatural devotion, the body begins producing a foul-smelling slime capable of sickening creatures nearby. Further changes permit the secretion of corrosive substances through the skin, allowing the worshipper to damage enemies through direct contact or project streams of acid against more distant opponents. Such individuals may also develop the ability to summon oozes, including gray oozes, ochre jellies, gelatinous cubes, and other dangerous creatures. Their bodies become increasingly adaptable, acquiring the capacity to change appearance and resist injuries that depend upon striking conventional vital organs. These transformations gradually separate the thrall from the physical limitations of its original species, bringing it closer to the shapeless condition regarded as sacred within the cult.
One of the few individually recorded mortal followers of the Faceless Lord is **Duvamil**, a female **gnome** whose dedication has granted her extraordinary supernatural abilities. Possessing training as both a rogue and a warrior, Duvamil combines considerable combat skill with powers acquired through her service to Juiblex. Her body secretes foul slime, her touch can inflict corrosive injuries, and her magic allows her to summon dangerous amorphous creatures or alter her appearance. She is capable of spreading disease and employing destructive acid against enemies, making her a formidable threat despite her small stature. Yet the most remarkable fact concerning Duvamil is that **Juiblex is entirely unaware of her existence**, demonstrating how little attention the Faceless Lord devotes to the mortals who worship it.
Duvamil's history reveals an essential distinction between Juiblex and those demon princes who actively cultivate cults throughout the Material Plane. Her powers are genuine, and her devotion is sincere, yet neither condition has inspired personal interest from the being she serves. She commits terrible acts in the name of a master whose principal concern remains the destruction and consumption of whatever enters its reach. Other thralls may exist in similar circumstances, spreading corruption and gathering oozes without ever receiving a deliberate command from the Faceless Lord. Their activities nevertheless extend its influence beyond the Abyss, demonstrating that even a relatively indifferent demon lord can inspire dangerous servants among mortals willing to abandon their former identities.

### Powers and Abilities
As a demon lord, **Juiblex** possesses extraordinary physical and supernatural abilities derived from its amorphous body and its association with corrosive substances. Its form can flow, expand, and contract with remarkable freedom, allowing it to move through narrow passages and envelop obstacles that would hinder creatures possessing rigid anatomy. Ordinary methods of restraining an opponent are frequently ineffective against it, for its gelatinous substance can change shape rather than resisting confinement through muscular strength alone. The absence of stable vital organs also protects it against many forms of injury that depend upon striking a vulnerable anatomical location. Although these characteristics resemble the abilities of ordinary oozes, the scale of Juiblex's power places it far beyond the creatures that serve within its domain.
Its body constantly secretes powerful **acid**, making physical contact exceptionally dangerous. Creatures struck by its pseudopods suffer both the force of the impact and the destructive effects of the corrosive substance coating them. Weapons and other objects brought against its body may also be damaged, while flesh and armour exposed to its secretions can rapidly deteriorate. Juiblex is capable of overwhelming opponents by expanding its body around them, trapping living creatures within the moving mass and subjecting them to continued corrosion. Those caught in this manner face not only physical injury but the danger of suffocation, for the surrounding slime prevents ordinary movement and access to breathable air.
The Faceless Lord possesses supernatural abilities that complement its physical attacks. It can surround itself with profound magical darkness, create areas of intense cold, and release dangerous patches of green slime whose corrosive properties threaten creatures that come into contact with them. Its magic also permits the spreading of disease, the manipulation of hostile enchantments, and the invocation of destructive unholy power. These abilities allow Juiblex to confront enemies through more than the direct application of physical strength, despite the apparent simplicity of its destructive desires. Its considerable intelligence ensures that it can employ such powers effectively, particularly when confronted by opponents capable of resisting ordinary acid or avoiding its immediate reach.
Juiblex can summon numerous amorphous creatures to assist it, reinforcing its natural connection with the oozes and jellies inhabiting Shedaklah. Gray oozes, ochre jellies, black puddings, and other monstrous substances may gather around the Faceless Lord, creating overwhelming concentrations of creatures capable of dissolving equipment and engulfing opponents. It can also call upon lesser demons when circumstances require assistance beyond the abilities of its usual servants. Its demonic nature grants substantial resistance to hostile magic and physical injury, while its immunity to certain destructive substances allows it to survive environments that would destroy most other beings. Nevertheless, Juiblex is not invulnerable, and sufficiently powerful magic or properly enchanted weapons can overcome the protections inherent in its body.
The most disturbing aspect of Juiblex's power is the ability to transform living beings into substances that resemble its own form. Certain servants undergo gradual changes that render their bodies increasingly gelatinous, while others may be engulfed and converted into sentient oozes. These transformations can preserve fragments of the victim's former awareness even after their physical identity has been destroyed, creating beings whose memories and thoughts persist within bodies no longer recognisably humanoid. The process is particularly horrifying because it may be embraced willingly by those who believe that becoming an ooze represents advancement in their master's service. Juiblex possesses no obligation to preserve such individuals, and their eventual absorption may leave nothing that can be distinguished from the greater mass of the Faceless Lord.
---
### Treatment of the Faithful
Juiblex possesses little concern for the welfare of its worshippers, and its relationship with mortal servants lacks the deliberate patronage maintained by many other demon lords. It rarely provides guidance or demands obedience through elaborate systems of reward and punishment, for the development of a powerful cult offers it little apparent advantage. Those who enter its service may nevertheless acquire supernatural abilities through the rites and transformations associated with their devotion. These gifts allow them to survive among dangerous oozes, spread corrosive substances, and develop bodily characteristics that make ordinary injury less effective. Yet the acquisition of such powers provides no assurance that the Faceless Lord values the recipient or will intervene to preserve their life.
The fate of its most devoted followers may be especially terrible. As their bodies become increasingly amorphous, they risk losing the characteristics that once distinguished them from the monsters they command. Some deliberately surrender themselves to oozes, believing that the destruction of their former physical identity will bring them closer to their master. Others develop similar characteristics through repeated exposure to Abyssal corruption, becoming creatures whose thoughts and appetites are increasingly dominated by the desire to consume. In later accounts, devotees who surrender themselves directly to Juiblex may become sentient oozes, retaining fragments of consciousness even as their bodies are transformed beyond recognition. Such a condition offers little evidence of spiritual reward, for the continued awareness of the victim may merely prolong the suffering associated with their unnatural existence.
This relationship distinguishes Juiblex from demon princes who cultivate followers through promises of wealth, authority, or immortality. The Faceless Lord offers no consistent vision of advancement beyond the destruction of ordinary bodily form, and its servants frequently interpret their own corruption as a blessing. Their devotion may be absolute, but the indifference of their master remains equally complete. To serve Juiblex is therefore to surrender oneself to a power whose appetite recognises no enduring distinction between worshipper and victim, and whose apparent favour may culminate in the dissolution of the individual who sought it.

### Myths and Legends
The origins of **Juiblex** remain uncertain, and the earliest accounts of the Faceless Lord are obscured by the immense antiquity of the Abyss. Certain planar traditions suggest that it existed during the age when the **obyriths** ruled much of the Lower Planes, before the ascendancy of the tanar'ri reshaped the hierarchy of demonkind. Others speculate that its profoundly alien form reflects an origin beyond the familiar generations of demons, perhaps in a region of existence whose substance and natural laws differ from those of the known planes. These theories remain disputed, for no universally accepted account identifies the circumstances of its creation. What is established is that Juiblex has endured through ages of demonic conflict without developing the conventional ambitions of rulers such as Demogorgon, Orcus, or Graz'zt.
Its apparent lack of interest in power has encouraged other demon lords to underestimate it. Some accounts suggest that Juiblex possesses knowledge concerning the earliest history of the Abyss, including secrets associated with ancient fiends whose names have vanished from ordinary demonic records. Despite the potential value of such knowledge, the Faceless Lord has shown little inclination to employ it in pursuit of political supremacy. Its continued existence may therefore reflect a strange form of security, for rulers who regard it as insignificant possess little reason to expend resources attempting to overthrow it. Whether this indifference is genuine or conceals ambitions not yet understood remains uncertain, although its established behaviour centres principally upon consumption, destruction, and the preservation of its territory.
**The Endless Struggle with Zuggtmoy**
The greatest enduring conflict associated with Juiblex concerns **Zuggtmoy**, the Demon Queen of Fungi, whose dominion occupies much of the surface of Shedaklah. The two rulers possess a natural rivalry because their respective servants depend upon similar forms of rotting material for sustenance. Monstrous fungi spread across the marshes and forests, while the amorphous creatures of Juiblex advance through caverns and chasms, consuming the growths encountered along their paths. Their struggles rarely resemble the organised military campaigns fought between other demon princes, for their principal forces consist of creatures whose instincts and physical forms differ considerably from those of conventional soldiers. Instead, their conflict proceeds through gradual invasions of territory, overwhelming concentrations of monstrous growth, and the destruction of whatever creatures become trapped between them.
For much of their recorded history, Zuggtmoy has possessed the advantage. Her servants dominate the surface of Shedaklah, while Juiblex's principal strength remains concentrated within the subterranean Slime Pits. The Faceless Lord has repeatedly attempted to extend its influence upward, sending concentrations of oozes into regions occupied by fungal creatures. These incursions have produced continual hostility, but neither ruler has succeeded in permanently expelling the other from the layer. Their rivalry therefore remains one of the most enduring territorial conflicts within the Abyss, demonstrating that even demon lords whose goals appear relatively simple can sustain hostilities across extraordinary lengths of time.
The balance between them changed during **Zuggtmoy's imprisonment within the Temple of Elemental Evil** upon the world of **Oerth**. With the Demon Queen unable to defend her realm directly, Juiblex extended its influence into regions previously dominated by her followers. Its oozes spread through additional caverns and contested passages, strengthening the Faceless Lord's control over portions of Shedaklah. Yet this expansion did not result in the permanent destruction of Zuggtmoy's authority, and her eventual return restored the possibility of renewed conflict. The episode demonstrates that Juiblex is capable of exploiting opportunities for territorial advancement, even though it does not ordinarily pursue conquest with the elaborate planning associated with other Abyssal princes.
**Darkness Given Hunger**
Among the countless amorphous creatures serving Juiblex, none possesses greater significance than **Darkness Given Hunger**, an enormous demonic black pudding whose unnatural intelligence distinguishes it from the ordinary oozes inhabiting Shedaklah. Unlike the countless mindless creatures whose behaviour requires little more than an instinct to feed, Darkness Given Hunger serves the Faceless Lord willingly. Its existence arose through the deliberate transformation of a powerful **hezrou demon**, whose spirit and consciousness were imprisoned within the body of an immense black pudding. The fusion was made permanent through supernatural magic, forcing the demon and the ooze to exist as a single creature whose physical form and mental nature could no longer be separated.
The transformation produced an abomination possessing the corrosive properties of an enormous pudding together with the intelligence and supernatural abilities of a demon. Darkness Given Hunger can overwhelm enemies through its immense gelatinous body, while the foul stench surrounding it is capable of sickening nearby creatures. Its demonic nature grants abilities unavailable to ordinary oozes, making it exceptionally dangerous even within the depths of Shedaklah. The creature serves as one of Juiblex's most powerful guardians and occasionally ventures beyond the Slime Pits in search of prey. Its existence demonstrates that the Faceless Lord can produce servants of considerable intelligence through methods that disregard the ordinary boundaries between different forms of life.
The history of Darkness Given Hunger is particularly significant because it provides a rare example of Juiblex deliberately creating a servant whose powers extend beyond those of ordinary amorphous creatures. The Faceless Lord ordinarily possesses little need for independent lieutenants, but the fusion of a hezrou with a black pudding produced a creature capable of undertaking responsibilities requiring supernatural strength and awareness. Its continued service also demonstrates the terrible possibilities of magic capable of binding one creature permanently within the body of another. For Juiblex, the result was not a violation of natural form to be regretted, but an expression of the dissolution and corruption that define its existence.
**The Fleshless Brethren**
Among the darker accounts associated with Juiblex is the destruction of members of the celebrated adventuring fellowship known as the **Six from Shadow**. Their history includes a confrontation with the **Fleshless Brethren**, a cult whose devotion to the Faceless Lord brought them into conflict with heroes of considerable accomplishment. Three members of the fellowship were destroyed through the activities of the cult, and the surviving companions eventually separated. The event demonstrates that even the relatively obscure servants of Juiblex can become dangerous enough to threaten individuals whose experience and abilities place them far beyond ordinary adventurers. Their influence therefore cannot be dismissed merely because the Faceless Lord lacks the extensive religious organisations maintained by other demon princes.
The account is also significant for what it reveals about the independence of such cults. There is no established indication that Juiblex personally directed the destruction of the adventurers or regarded the outcome as an important victory. The deeds of the Fleshless Brethren nevertheless spread suffering in its name, providing another example of the destructive potential possessed by worshippers whose patron may have little interest in their individual activities. Such groups can therefore influence events upon the Material Plane without requiring direct intervention from their Abyssal master.
**The Pudding King of Blingdenstone**
A later and particularly disturbing account from the **Underdark of Faerûn** concerns the creature known as **the Pudding King**, a deep gnome whose devotion to Juiblex threatened the subterranean city of **Blingdenstone**. Once a member of the svirfneblin community, the Pudding King possessed an unusual fascination with oozes and the ability to communicate with certain amorphous creatures. His increasingly unstable behaviour eventually separated him from ordinary society, leaving him to dwell among the monsters that other deep gnomes regarded as dangerous infestations. Rather than fear these creatures, he treated them as companions and gradually constructed a delusional royal identity around his imagined authority over them.
Among his most unusual associates were **Princess Ebonmire**, an intelligent black pudding, and **Prince Livid**, a gray ooze possessing unusual supernatural characteristics. The Pudding King regarded these creatures as members of his court, reinforcing his belief that he had been destined to rule the oozes inhabiting the caverns of Blingdenstone. His madness became considerably more dangerous when the influence of **Juiblex** spread through the Underdark during the events surrounding the appearance of multiple demon lords upon the Material Plane. Recognising the Faceless Lord as the source of power he had long desired, the deep gnome devoted himself completely to its service and acquired the ability to command large numbers of amorphous creatures.
The Pudding King subsequently established his court within the abandoned regions of Blingdenstone, gathering an army of oozes whose growing numbers threatened the settlement's surviving inhabitants. His servants occupied passages and chambers that ordinary defenders could not easily secure, while their corrosive bodies made conventional barriers unreliable. The threat was particularly dangerous because it did not resemble an ordinary invasion by armed enemies, but the gradual occupation of the city's interior by creatures capable of flowing through narrow openings and dissolving obstacles. His activities eventually forced the deep gnomes to confront the growing infestation before it overwhelmed their remaining territory. The episode provides one of the clearest examples of Juiblex directly empowering a mortal servant and extending its influence through an organised concentration of oozes.
The events at Blingdenstone also reveal the danger inherent in the Faceless Lord's supernatural influence upon creatures already inclined toward madness. The Pudding King did not seek political supremacy in the ordinary sense, but imagined himself the ruler of an amorphous kingdom whose inhabitants existed to fulfil his delusions. Through the power of Juiblex, those delusions acquired a terrible reality, transforming an isolated madman into the leader of a destructive force. His story demonstrates that the apparent mindlessness of ordinary oozes does not prevent them from becoming instruments of coordinated destruction when directed by a powerful supernatural intelligence.
---
### Encounters with Juiblex
Encounters with **Juiblex** are exceptionally dangerous because its amorphous nature makes ordinary assumptions about movement, anatomy, and physical restraint unreliable. Travellers entering the Slime Pits of Shedaklah may discover that the surrounding landscape is inhabited by far more living creatures than initially apparent. A smooth cavern floor may conceal a black pudding spread across the stone, while stagnant pools may suddenly rise into predatory forms capable of engulfing intruders. The enormous concentrations of gelatinous creatures make even ordinary travel hazardous, for a single careless movement can expose a creature to corrosive substances or place it within reach of several monsters at once.
The presence of **Darkness Given Hunger** presents an especially grave danger. Unlike ordinary oozes, this enormous demonic pudding possesses intelligence sufficient to recognise powerful opponents and employ supernatural abilities against them. Its immense body can overwhelm enemies through crushing force and corrosion, while its foul stench makes approaching it dangerous even before combat begins. Travellers encountering such a creature may discover that the apparently mindless guardian is capable of pursuing them deliberately rather than simply responding to nearby movement. The monster's unusual nature makes it one of the most formidable servants protecting the deepest regions of Juiblex's realm.
A direct manifestation of Juiblex may initially resemble nothing more than an enormous accumulation of slime. As the creature moves, however, numerous crimson eyes appear across its surface, while powerful pseudopods emerge from the shifting mass and extend toward nearby victims. Its corrosive body makes direct physical contact dangerous, while its ability to engulf opponents can transform a seemingly manageable confrontation into a desperate struggle for escape. Supernatural darkness, intense cold, and the sudden appearance of additional oozes further complicate attempts to withstand its attacks. Those who underestimate its intelligence may find that their efforts to retreat have been anticipated, particularly within the narrow passages of its own domain.
Upon the **Material Plane**, the Faceless Lord is more commonly encountered through cultists, corrupted oozes, or unusual concentrations of amorphous creatures. An abandoned temple filled with gelatinous monsters may conceal a thrall whose supernatural abilities have drawn them together, while the disappearance of travellers within an apparently ordinary sewer may indicate the presence of a dangerous infestation. Such circumstances do not automatically establish the involvement of Juiblex, for oozes exist naturally within many subterranean environments. Nevertheless, the appearance of supernatural transformations, intelligent oozes, or mortal servants capable of commanding large concentrations of these creatures may suggest the influence of the Faceless Lord. Its involvement is particularly dangerous when the corruption begins affecting living beings, threatening to dissolve not merely their bodies but the identities that distinguish them from the monsters they serve.

### Conclusion
**Juiblex, the Faceless Lord**, is among the most repulsive and alien demon princes of the **Abyss**, ruling the slime-filled depths of **Shedaklah**, the 222nd layer, alongside its ancient rival **Zuggtmoy**. Its dominion is populated by countless oozes, slimes, jellies, and puddings whose corrosive appetites reflect its own desire to consume and destroy. Unlike the demon lords whose ambitions concern military conquest and political supremacy, Juiblex possesses little interest in conventional authority, preferring the endless destruction of living matter and the preservation of a realm whose environment is almost entirely hostile to ordinary life.
Its continued existence demonstrates the danger of underestimating a being whose goals appear simple. Although other demon princes mock it as the **Lord of Nothing**, Juiblex possesses considerable intelligence and supernatural power, while its indifference toward political conflict has allowed it to survive without attracting the sustained hostility directed toward more ambitious rulers. Its ancient history remains uncertain, and speculation concerning its origins has never produced a universally accepted account. Nevertheless, its dominion over Shedaklah, its association with Molor, and its long struggle against Zuggtmoy establish it as an enduring presence within the Lower Planes.
The Faceless Lord's influence extends into mortal worlds through rare cultists and extraordinary servants such as **Duvamil**, **Darkness Given Hunger**, and the **Pudding King**. These beings demonstrate the varied forms through which its corruption may spread, from the deliberate transformation of an unwilling demon to the empowerment of a mortal whose madness has prepared him to surrender entirely to the worship of oozes. Their histories also reveal that Juiblex need not maintain an organised church or cultivate personal loyalty to inspire terrible acts of destruction beyond its own realm.
Juiblex embodies the destruction of physical form and the dissolution of individual identity into undifferentiated substance. Its horror lies not merely in the pain inflicted upon its victims, but in the possibility that everything distinguishing one creature from another may be destroyed through its corrosive embrace. The Faceless Lord remains a terrible and enduring power of the Abyss, representing a form of evil whose existence threatens the boundaries between living flesh, lifeless matter, and the monstrous hunger that seeks to consume them both.
