## Overview
The **phaerimm** are among the oldest and most dangerous beings in Faerûn. Ancient even before the rise of Netheril, they are immensely intelligent aberrations whose mastery of innate magic rivalled—and in some respects exceeded—that of the greatest mortal archwizards. Their hatred of other intelligent races, particularly those that build civilizations through arcane magic, has shaped the history of northern Faerûn for thousands of years.
The phaerimm are infamous for the destruction they brought upon the Empire of Netheril. Through their unique life-draining magic, they transformed a fertile land into the barren wasteland that would become the **Anauroch Desert**, contributing directly to the empire's decline. Though many were imprisoned beneath the desert by the elves and their allies, the phaerimm have never been completely eradicated. Those that survive remain patient, cunning, and relentlessly hostile to any civilization that threatens their freedom.

## Appearance
A phaerimm bears little resemblance to any natural creature. Its body is conical or spindle-shaped, tapering toward a long tail while broadening toward its head. The upper body is ringed with numerous tentacles, each capable of fine manipulation, allowing the creature to cast spells, wield objects, or attack with surprising dexterity.
Its head contains a large, beak-like mouth surrounded by sensory organs rather than recognisably humanoid features. A phaerimm moves by levitating, rarely touching the ground, and glides through the air with unsettling grace. Their alien physiology immediately marks them as beings wholly separate from the natural races of Toril.

## Origins
The true origin of the phaerimm is unknown.
Unlike dragons, giants, elves, or other ancient peoples, no reliable record describes where they first came from or how they arrived on Toril. Even the oldest dragons possess only speculation regarding their beginnings. Some sages believe they are native to Toril and predate most mortal civilizations. Others argue they originated on another world or even another plane of existence before arriving in Faerûn in unimaginably ancient times.
No canonical source definitively answers this question, leaving their beginnings one of the enduring mysteries of Forgotten Realms lore.

## Nature and Intelligence
Phaerimm possess intellects comparable to the greatest mortal geniuses. They think on vastly different timescales than humans, patiently pursuing plans that may span centuries. They are exceptionally arrogant, viewing most other races as inferior creatures fit only to be manipulated, enslaved, or exterminated.
Unlike many evil beings driven by conquest alone, phaerimm delight in the destruction of civilizations. They view thriving societies as threats to their own dominance and often seek to undermine them long before launching open conflict.
---
## Innate Magic
Magic is intrinsic to a phaerimm's existence.
Rather than studying spells through books or formal instruction, phaerimm naturally manipulate arcane forces as an inherent part of their biology. Their spellcasting requires neither spoken incantations nor material components, allowing them to wield powerful magic with terrifying speed and precision.
Their magical abilities include devastating offensive spells, defensive wards, illusions, enchantments, teleportation, and powerful forms of magical manipulation. Throughout history, even accomplished archmages have regarded phaerimm as some of the most dangerous spellcasters ever encountered.

## The Life Drain
The phaerimm's most infamous ability is their power to drain life from the land itself.
Rather than attacking individual creatures, they can weave immense magical rituals that draw vitality from entire regions. Vegetation withers, rivers dry, wildlife dies, and fertile soil becomes sterile. The damage extends far beyond ordinary drought, permanently altering the land's ability to sustain life.
During their war against Netheril, repeated use of this magic gradually transformed lush grasslands and forests into the vast desert now known as **Anauroch**. Even after thousands of years, much of the land has never recovered.
This ecological devastation remains one of the greatest magical disasters in the history of Toril.

## The War Against Netheril
The rise of Netheril brought humanity into direct conflict with the phaerimm.
As the Netherese Empire expanded and its arcanists developed increasingly powerful magic, the phaerimm recognised the empire as a rival. Rather than confronting the Netherese armies directly, they began draining the land upon which the empire depended.
Crop failures, famine, and environmental collapse spread across Netheril. Although the archwizards devised magical solutions that delayed disaster—including magical agriculture, floating cities, and increasingly powerful spells—the underlying destruction continued.
The conflict escalated into one of the greatest magical wars in history. Both sides unleashed extraordinary arcane power, devastating the landscape and exhausting immense resources. Although Netheril survived the war itself, the empire was left dangerously weakened before Karsus's Folly ultimately brought about its collapse.

## Imprisonment Beneath Anauroch
The phaerimm were not defeated through military conquest alone.
Recognising that the creatures could not simply be exterminated, the elves, aided by powerful magic and allied spellcasters, created an immense magical prison beneath Anauroch. This prison relied upon the **Sharn**, mysterious beings devoted to maintaining the balance of magic, who became the eternal wardens of the imprisoned phaerimm.
Many phaerimm remained trapped beneath the desert for centuries, unable to escape their magical confinement. Although individual phaerimm occasionally found ways to influence the surface or manipulate others into weakening the prison, most remained sealed away beneath the sands.
---
## The Sharn
The greatest enemies of the phaerimm are the **Sharn**, ancient beings intrinsically tied to the Weave and the preservation of magical balance.
The Sharn devoted themselves to preventing the phaerimm from escaping imprisonment and resuming their campaign against the civilizations of Faerûn. Throughout history, conflicts between these two races have occurred largely beyond the awareness of ordinary mortals.
To many sages, the struggle between the phaerimm and the Sharn represents one of the oldest ongoing conflicts in the Realms.
---
## Society
Phaerimm possess little interest in kingdoms, nations, or conventional governments. Their society is based upon magical power, age, and personal dominance. Older and more powerful individuals command the obedience of weaker phaerimm, though alliances are often temporary and driven by mutual advantage rather than loyalty.
They rarely cooperate with other races except when manipulation offers some strategic benefit. Even their own kind frequently compete for knowledge and influence.
---
## Relationship with Dragons
Dragons and phaerimm have opposed one another since ancient times.
Many dragons view the phaerimm with deep suspicion, recognising them as one of the few races capable of challenging dragonkind through magical power alone. Likewise, the phaerimm consider dragons dangerous competitors whose intelligence and longevity make them difficult to manipulate.
This mutual hostility explains why dragons such as **Iymrith** approach ancient phaerimm ruins with caution despite their immense confidence.
According to established lore, Iymrith once entered **Anarath** searching for ancient magical knowledge and encountered phaerimm dwelling within the ruins. Despite her tremendous power, she was forced to retreat after barely surviving the encounter. Only after spending years expanding her magical knowledge did she return, destroy the phaerimm occupying the city, and claim Anarath as her lair.

## The Return of the Phaerimm
During the late fourteenth century DR, several phaerimm escaped their ancient imprisonment and once again threatened northern Faerûn. Their return contributed to widespread instability throughout Anauroch and brought them into renewed conflict with the **City of Shade**, the **Sharn**, and numerous powerful spellcasters.
Although many of these escaped phaerimm were eventually defeated, the race was not completely destroyed. Their vast age, hidden refuges, and unknown numbers mean that isolated phaerimm may still lurk beneath Anauroch or within forgotten Netherese ruins.

## Legacy
Few creatures have shaped the history of Faerûn as profoundly as the phaerimm. Their war with Netheril transformed the geography of an entire continent, destroyed one of history's greatest empires through relentless attrition, and created the Anauroch Desert that still dominates north-central Faerûn.
To modern scholars, they are remembered not merely as powerful monsters, but as one of the greatest existential threats the Realms has ever faced. Their mastery of innate magic, their patience, and their willingness to wage war across centuries make them uniquely dangerous opponents. Even in the present age, rumours of phaerimm activity are treated with the utmost seriousness by those who understand the devastation these ancient beings have wrought before.
