## Encounter 1. The Soul Engine When the party enters the chamber, read: > The corridor opens into an enormous circular chamber. At its centre stands an immense machine of black crystal and polished silver, unlike anything else within the prison. Hundreds of crystal conduits descend from the ceiling and disappear into the device, each carrying a faint stream of spectral energy. Suspended above the machine is a single empty socket perfectly sized to receive a soul prism. Standing before the machine is Acererak. His body appears translucent, fragments of him constantly breaking apart before reforming again. He watches the party with an amused smile. Acererak is not physically present. This is an **Aspect** left behind to oversee the prison. He cannot leave the chamber. --- ### Acererak's Aspect The Aspect has no interest in immediate combat. Instead, it speaks with the party. It freely explains the purpose of the machine. > "Every prison requires balance." > "One soul enters." > "One soul leaves." > "Such has always been the rule." The Aspect openly encourages the party to save Diamond, knowing exactly what the cost will be. It never mentions Lord Robilar. --- ### The Soul Engine The machine contains a single empty socket. Any soul prism may be placed inside. Doing so activates the machine. A creature must then willingly stand upon the circular platform before the device. At the end of one minute, the machine exchanges the two souls. - The imprisoned soul is released. - The volunteer becomes the prison's newest occupant. - The volunteer's body falls lifeless to the floor. - Their soul becomes trapped within a newly formed prism. The exchange cannot be interrupted once it begins. --- ### Lord Robilar If Lord Robilar's soul prism is placed into the machine, the sequence begins normally. The machine recognises the soul as the **Primary Anchor**. Moments before the exchange completes, every crystal conduit throughout the chamber fractures. The machine overloads. The Aspect of Acererak immediately realises what has happened. > "No..." The prison begins collapsing. Every soul prism throughout the Black Gem shatters simultaneously. Every imprisoned soul is released. Diamond is freed. Lord Robilar is freed. The Soul Engine is destroyed. --- ### Development The party must make one final choice. - Use Diamond's soul prism and sacrifice one of their own to save only Diamond. - Leave the prison unchanged. - Release Lord Robilar, destroying the Black Gem and freeing every imprisoned soul while unleashing one of the greatest villains ever imprisoned by Acererak. Whatever choice they make determines the fate of every soul trapped within the Black Gem.
